Ted Lasso Season 4 is officially in production, and star and writer Brett Goldstein has shared what we should expect from the return of the sports comedy led by Jason Sudeikis. Goldstein, a co-writer on the show and the actor who portrays fan favorite character Roy Kent, is about to shoot his part in Season 4, and while he remaining coy, he’s already spilled a few beans about a very “emotional” episode he’s writing. The problem is, he hasn’t revealed whether it’ll make us laugh or cry. (Knowing this show, it’ll probably be a bit of both.)
Goldstein was recently interviewed for In Style, and during the conversation he teased his participation in Season 4 of the series, which follows the continuing adventures of the titular American football coach as he tries to find his footing as a soccer coach in the United Kingdom. Season 3 concluded the show’s initial arc beautifully, and the series officially ended with its finale. Apple TV+, however, managed to convince everyone that the show was ripe for a return.
Goldstein will join his former crew overseas for Season 4. “It’ll be nice,” he mused. “It’s been three years since we’ve actually filmed together? Probably. I keep imagining the set and feeling at home.” He also confirmed that he’s co-writing an episode with Ted Lasso alum Jamie Lee that’ll pack a particular punch:
“I am co-writing an episode with Jamie Lee. It’s definitely an emotional episode, but will that emotion be happy? It’s possible. I’m very excited about that episode. All I can say is, I’m very excited about it. Does that mean it’s sad? Probably.”
Goldstein saw his career profile grow exponentially after Ted Lasso took off, thanks in no small part to the fact that Roy Kent is one of the show’s most compelling characters. The role earned Goldstein multiple accolades, including SAG awards and Emmys. His chops as a writer also allowed him to land another comedy gig on Apple TV+ with Shrinking. He said the following about his writing process, and how it’s evolved throughout the years:
“When it comes to writing episodes, when it’s the really emotional sad ones I’m like, ‘I’ll do that one!’ But I do think that most of these things have mostly happy endings. Certainly in my 20s or whatever, the stuff I wrote was dark, dark, dark. And dark endings—everyone died in the end. Awful. Sort of, It’s cool to be bleak and all that.
“I now think life is hard—I like to give people some hope. But I like the idea of earning it. I think a happy ending is great, and I think we all deserve having happy endings. You just want it to have been earned by the storytelling, so it is really satisfying, rather than cheesy. You know what I mean?”
‘Ted Lasso’ Returns With Season 4, But Will It Premiere in 2026?

Whether characters are laughing or crying on the set of Ted Lasso Season 4, fans remain in the dark about its highly anticipated return. So far, we’ve gotten a preview that didn’t really show anything about the plot and only teased the return of a few characters. Production remains underway, but the release date remains a mystery. 2026 could be the year of release, but it’s simply too early to confirm.
Shrinking, Apple TV+’s other major comedy hit, will debut its third season soon. While the Harrison Ford and Jason Segel series — which, as previously mentioned, also features Goldstein as a member of its cast and writing team — will likely arrive before Ted Lasso Season 4, its release date is also unclear. It’s likely that the streamer will space them out for maximum impact.
