David Spade and Theo Von Are Making a Buddy Comedy

Sometimes, if you want something done, you’ve got to do it yourself. And since Hollywood is allergic to making comedies anymore, veteran deadpan imp David Spade and podcast empresario Theo Von have joined forces to bring a genre back from the brink of extinction. Their project, Busboys, was written, produced, and self-financed by the two comedians, and will start production early next year. Spade spoke with Deadline about the project, saying:

“We are looking forward to gracing everyone with this comedy that no one asked for.”

With a career that spans over 30 years, we take a look back at the former SNL star’s greatest movies and rank them.

Major plot intricacies are a mystery right now, but broadly speaking, the film is set in a small Arizona town, where two friends (played by Spade and Von) think that becoming waiters will solve all their problems. That’s pretty thin soup to extrapolate beats and overall storyline, but Spade has penned several features over the years and starred in many more, so no doubt there will be more behind the logline we’ve received.

The Men Behind The Madness

Spade came out of the Gen X-revered second golden age of Saturday Night Live and was part of the “Bad Boys of SNL” alongside Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock, and Norm Macdonald. Since his sketch comedy days, Spade has been nominated for four Emmy Awards, and hit us with juvenile gems such as Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star and Joe Dirt. And while those movies aren’t exactly required viewing for a Liberal Arts Degree, they actually swing for big jokes and quality physical gags – Joe Dirt’s cigarette ash bit in the gator scene still kills. Spade has been steadily turning out new stuff with movies on Netflix, such as The Wrong Missy, which he said is the platform keeping broad comedies alive.

Theo Von, on the other hand, has taken the podcast world by storm, parlaying a middling stand-up career into a podcast juggernaut with his show This Past Weekend — the No. 3 comedy podcast in the US. Trading a Shure SM57 for an SM7b (techies will know), Von has conducted some very high- and low-profile interviews, and now commands the cultural and financial capital to make his own projects. While his stand-up specials are light on crafted jokes and heavy on stories and attention-grabbing xenophobia, sexism and light racism, he has captured a podcast audience that vibes with his stream of consciousness approach.

With Spade’s comedy bonafides and Von’s particular style and hold of a younger audience, the two will likely deliver something silly, over the top, and crass. Time will tell if people are asking for this, or if Spade’s cheeky announcement is actually prophetic.
