Host, Nominations, and What to Know

In 1992, the first-ever MTV Movie Awards were presented with Dennis Miller as the show’s host. The new awards show aimed to destigmatize awards ceremonies and turn them into a fun and unexpected experience for all viewers. The show premieres every year at the start of the summer blockbuster season for the film industry and also allows for the general public to vote and decide the recipients for each year’s awards.

In 2017, which celebrated the 26th year of the awards, MTV expanded the show’s reach and decided to honor television as well. From then on, it was titled the MTV Movie & TV Awards. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the MTV awards, and audiences are more excited than ever to find out who will take home a golden popcorn.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

So, let’s dive into what we know about this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards. The show will air at 8 pm on Sunday, June 5, 2022, on MTV and other Paramount channels, including BET, Comedy Central, MTV2, Paramount Network, and VH1. The scripted ceremony will be followed by UNSCRIPTED at 10 pm on the same network channels.

MTV Movie & TV Awards: The Host

Netflix

It has been revealed, after much secrecy, that Vanessa Hudgens will host this year’s show. Hudgens is known for her rise to fame through the Disney Channel circuit when she started in High School Musical. However, the starlet has recently scored hosting points when she hosted the MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time special in 2020. The actress proved her commitment to being a bonafide host when she introduced the greatest Scream Queen of all time, Jamie Lee Curtis, and ended up doused with fake blood. Now that’s method!

Hudgens took to Twitter to announce her arrival back in the hosting sphere, posting a video to the @MTVAwards account. In the video, Hudgens happily says:

“I’m back!…and trust me: You don’t want to miss this.”

MTV Movie & TV Awards: The Nominations

Marvel Studios

The show is known for its outrageous categories that differ from the typical awards ceremony. While there are featured categories often found in the awards circuit — Best Movie, Best Show, etc. — there are several original ones that have always attracted viewers, like Best Kiss. What’s more, audiences love how strange and cringe-worthy the show gets. One year, Pitch Perfect stars Rebel Wilson and Adam Devine made out while rolling around on the floor. In another, Rita Ora ripped off Zac Efron’s shorts, much to the glee of many a teenage girl. So What’s to be expected from this year’s nominees?

Spider-Man: No Way Home is in the lead with seven nominations ranging from Best Movie to Best Performance in a Movie. HBO’s hit teen drama Euphoria takes second place with six nominations, and The Batman is in third with four. Many think Zendaya is the obvious choice for Best Kiss, in which she is nominated with her real-life-boyfriend Tom Holland. Squid Game, which premiered on Netflix this year, is also in favor to win for Best Show. Still, the category is stacked with nominees like Marvel’s Loki, Euphoria, Inventing Anna, Ted Lasso, and Yellowstone.

Not much else is known quite yet for this year’s awards show, but more is to be released as the premiere comes closer.
