John Boyega, the actor known for playing Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, has revealed what he thought would be the direction of the franchise after he read the script for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. The first film in the latest trilogy put Finn beside Rey (Daisy Ridley) as a strong partner during their search for Luke and the battle against the First Order. The problem is that, in the following movies, Finn’s role was markedly reduced. Even though he can be seen in the posters, Boyega isn’t as prominent in the follow-up films, something he was admittedly surprised by. Upon reading that first script, he actually thought he’d have a larger role, be Force-sensitive, and eventually become a worthy antagonist.
As reported by Screen Rant, Boyega appeared at Fan Expo Boston, where he talked about his tenure in the Star Wars franchise. When talking about The Force Awakens and his arrival in the universe created by George Lucas, Boyega shared his initial reaction to the script. It was only the first story of many, although he had envisioned a very different future for Finn and Rey and their relationship. He even compared the two characters to Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
“I think I assumed he was Force-sensitive from The Force Awakens script, or at least by the time I got to the end of The Force Awakens script.
“I thought they were planning dual Jedis. I actually thought that they would Obi-Wan and Darth Vader us a bit. That we would turn against each other or something along those lines.”
Does Boyega Regret His Decision to Be in ‘Star Wars’?
The Actor Has Said in the Past That He Doesn’t Think Highly of the Sequel Trilogy

After the sequel trilogy ended, leaving the Star Wars fandom base divided between those who hated the new franchise direction and those who were much more receptive, Boyega drifted away from the movies. Every time he spoke, it seemed more and more obvious that he wasn’t quite happy with the direction his character took, and what he recently said may be the reason behind his occasional disdain. But let’s be clear. He hasn’t said that he hates Star Wars. He just doesn’t like what the new creative team has done with it (and the lack of diversity).
Regardless, while he doesn’t think highly of the sequel trilogy, Boyega isn’t completely against the idea of returning to the Star Wars universe in a future sequel. He talked about a potential return a few months ago at Fan Expo Philadelphia, but also shared a few conditions:
“So for me, everybody knows, it’s dependent on treating the character well, it’s dependent on fulfilling the arc that was teased quite a lot during the process. And hopefully, this time, it’s them approaching it by having a plan of what they’re going to do throughout the whole series.”
