Legends of the Hidden Temple Reboot Brings Back Original Host Kirk Fogg

Almost 26 years after Nickelodeon’s Legends of the Hidden Temple staged its final run of the obstacle-course game show, the CW has brought Olmec (the giant, talking Mesoamerican head, that was voiced by Dee Bradley Baker in the original) back to life. While retaining many of the original elements from the 1990s kids game show, the revival will feature a supersized set that is built for adult contestants, who will be put to the test by a new host, actor and comedian Cristela Alonzo (Cars 3, His Dark Materials, Cristela). However, it was recently revealed to TMZ, that the host of the original series, Kirk Fogg, is also one of the faces coming back to the rebooted competition show, Legends of the Hidden Temple.

Inspired by the Nintendo game The Legend of Zelda and the Indiana Jones movie franchise, and created by David G. Stanley, Scott A. Stone, and Stephen R. Brown, the original Legends of the Hidden Temple competition show aired from 1993 to 1995 on Nickelodeon, with repeats airing continuously for nearly 30 years. Since then, Legends of the Hidden Temple has itself inspired a movie, mobile games, and a board game. Now, it’s also inspired an adult-sized revival.

The adult-sized revival of Legends of the Hidden Temple was first ordered in December 2019 at the now-dead Quibi, which launched in April 2020 and shut down six months later. Thus, the series never made it to air at Quibi, and when the streaming service died, The CW took the opportunity to pick up the revival of the game show. Legends of the Hidden Temple involves four teams competing against each other in different obstacle course challenges for a grand prize. Per The CW,

“This supersized, adult version of Legends of the Hidden Temple preserves many of the original Nickelodeon series’ favorite elements, including Olmec – the giant talking Mayan head – the Moat Crossings, The Steps of Knowledge, the Temple Run, and of course, the iconic team names: Purple Parrots, Blue Barracudas, Orange Iguanas, Red Jaguars, Silver Snakes and Green Monkeys. Only this time, the entire show is taken out of the studio into a jungle and scaled up with tougher challenges and much bigger prizes on the line. Every episode is a hero’s journey through a mysterious jungle. Five teams begin the journey, but only one is strong enough and smart enough to enter the ominous Olmec’s Temple, avoid the dreaded Temple Guards, retrieve a lost treasure, and return it to its rightful owner.”

Alongside new Legends of the Hidden Temple host Alonzo, Kirk Fogg is returning as a co-host for future episodes of the series, and it doesn’t sound like it’s a one-episode deal, according to TMZ, who caught up with the former Nickelodeon host outside of a Starbucks in Studio City, California. Kirk also gave TMZ his thoughts on the new host and new look for Legends of the Hidden Temple and told some fun stories from Olmec’s original labyrinths. Watch below:

The CW’s Legends of the Hidden Temple is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment and Nickelodeon, and executive produced by original co-creator Scott A. Stone and Marcus Fox. News of Kirk Fogg’s return comes to us from TMZ.
