Werewolf By Night Contains Lots of Gore Because ‘No One Said No’

Michael Giacchino is bringing something original to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Werewolf By Night. The Disney+ Halloween special is heavily inspired by some classic horror films that came before it, including Creature From the Black Lagoon and The Wolf Man. The official synopsis for the project reads: “Follows a lycanthrope superhero who fights evil using the abilities given to him by a curse brought on by his bloodline.”

Werewolf By Night will be released almost entirely in black and white; however, that’s not the only thing that distinguishes itself from other MCU projects. According to Giacchino, the Disney+ special will include a lot more gore than what most Marvel fans are used to. During an interview with IGN, the director spoke about the heavier use of blood and gore and its service in the project.

“Well, it was one of those things where no one said no,” Giacchino explains. “I just kept pushing. I knew that we were going to balance that with heart and humor and humanity and empathy and all of that. And as long as we kept that balance in tow that I felt like we had some leeway to push on the horror side.” Of course, the director, who also serves as composer on Werewolf By Night, said the extra blood was necessary when dealing with monsters. “And look, we’re dealing with monsters, monster movies, and I felt like we needed to just go into that realm, just not be afraid of it. And if that meant, ‘Sorry, you’re going to have to edit this,’ somebody came into my room. And if that meant that we were going to try some new things, we were going to try some new things.”

Giacchino Admits There Was Some Hesitancy Surrounding the Gore

Of course, audiences shouldn’t expect a bloodbath like a hard R-rated movie. However, Werewolf By Night will likely present a more horrific take on its characters than other MCU projects. Giacchino admits there was some hesitancy around the decisions being made, but the director feels they all benefit the Halloween special.

“I think there was an air around the production of, ‘What’s going to happen? Are they going to let us do this while we come back with all this footage that is so violent? What’s going to happen?'” he explains. “But I knew in my heart that what we were doing was not sadistic. We weren’t creating a film that was all about just indiscriminate killing. I was about the people. And I feel like if you keep it about the characters and the people, then you’ll have some leeway to do some other things that you normally wouldn’t get to do.” He concludes by saying, “And being in black and white didn’t hurt us either.”

Fans are prepared to be spooked with Gael García Bernal, Laura Donnelly, Harriet Sansom Harris, Eugenie Bondurant, and Leonardo Lam leading Giacchino’s Disney+ special. Werewolf By Night is set to release this week via the streaming giant on October 7.
