Outlander Season 8 Unexpectedly Included a Storyline from the Book — And I Love It!

When Outlander Season 8 was announced as the final season, we all knew it had to be based on Go Tell the Bees That I’m Gone and would include its own ending.

After all, there’s still another book to go, but it’s nowhere near finished yet, and it’s not like Diana Gabaldon (or us viewers) wants that storyline ruined.

However, we expected Outlander would skip some of the book’s storylines. But to my delight, one of them survived — yes, I’m talking about Fergus.

Fergus Has a Chance to Learn About His Lineage

For the longest time, Fergus Fraser has been an orphan born in a brothel.

The boy didn’t even know his own mother, yet during Outlander Season 8, he could learn his whole lineage.

During Outlander Season 8 Episode 3, Lord John Grey and Percy Beauchamp chatted at luncheon, with Percy making it clear that he needed John’s help to speak to a Claudel Fraser.

This is Fergus, and it opens the storyline that starts in An Echo in the Bone and continues through to Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.

Without any major spoilers (especially since we don’t know the exact route Outlander will take), Percy needs to see Fergus to tell him about both his mother and father.

These are details that come as a complete surprise, especially in that it turns out that Fergus is the son of a particular Comte.

Is it true? That’s for book readers to figure out for themselves, and there is still another book to come to go into more detail and hopefully bring answers.

As for the show, anything could go, but it opens up something exciting for Fergus.

It gives him a chance to learn about his lineage, which many orphans would love to know.

While it may not affect their lives now, it gives them the opportunity to figure out who they could have been or what happened to their parents.

Fergus Can Make Peace With Who He Is

Fergus went through one hell of a journey throughout Outlander Season 6, and that journey brought him close to suicide.

If it wasn’t for Jamie, maybe he would have taken his life that day.

Instead, he recovered and found a place for himself in the world by going back to printing.

That was where he felt useful, and he has managed to build a great life for himself and his family with Savannah.

While he has all of that, he deserves something more, and that’s where this storyline comes in.

As he learns about his life in France and his origins, he has the opportunity to make peace with who he is today.

Of course, there are going to be questions of what could have been, but Fergus knows that the life he has now is an amazing one.

There’s probably not much that he would change — save maybe not losing his hand in the fashion that he did — but sometimes, it’s hard to see that.

It’s only when given the chance to change things that he can see it all.

While Jamie isn’t his biological father, he has raised Fergus from a young age to the point that Fergus was happy and proud to be given the name Fergus back on Outlander Season 3.

Jamie is his father, and deep down, he has always known and loved that.

This entire arc allows Fergus the chance to see that he has the best life he could, and after everything he has been through, he deserves that!

While many people focus on the theory that Fergus is a time traveler based on the book storyline, it’s the peace and acceptance that come with finding his place that offer greater depth of character.

Care to chime in with your thoughts?
It’s your comments that help independent spots like us stay alive, and I just love not talking into the void! So, what do you think of this Outlander arc, and what are you excited to learn about Fergus in the coming episodes?

  • Outlander Season 8 was never going to be able to fit in all the storylines from the books, so I was pleasantly surprised this one was.

  • Multiple book plots take center stage on Outlander Season 8 Episode 3, with one of them being the most long-awaited one.

  • There are always some Outlander book storylines we would love to see ignored or forgotten, and there are some I was …
