Maika Monroe is a nanny out for blood in the first trailer for The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, which pits the Longlegs star against Mary Elizabeth Winstead. A remake of the 1992 film starring Annabella Sciorra and Rebecca De Mornay, the first look at the upcoming Hulu release promises plenty of twists and turns as a couple is terrorized by their child’s caretaker.
Hulu has unleashed the official trailer for The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, which is set to premiere on the streamer on October 22. As the footage teases, Monroe plays a nanny named Polly Murphy, who is hired by Caitlin Morales (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Raúl Castillo (Miguel Morales) to take care of their young child. Unbeknownst to the couple, it seems Polly has an ulterior motive, one that jeopardizes the marriage and everyone’s lives. If the remake sticks close to the original, an unexpected motive for the nanny will likely be revealed that shakes the foundation of the family to its core. You can watch the trailer below.
The highly anticipated remake is directed by Michelle Garza Cervera, known for her directorial debut horror thriller Huesera: The Bone Woman. She helmed The Hand That Rocks the Cradle based on a screenplay by Micah Bloomberg, who previously worked on the 2022 psychological thriller Sanctuary. The film will be a hard remake, jettisoning the original cast and crew for a pair of familiar faces from the modern horror genre. With Monroe and Winstead at the helm, a worthy successor to the cult classic original could be upon us.
Original ‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’ Star Gets Candid About Remake
While promoting her new film, Saint Clare, this summer, the original star of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Rebecca De Mornay, talked to MovieWeb about the impending remake from Hulu. She was initially hesitant to accept the idea of a new version of her 1992 film, but eventually conceded that remakes are inevitable. In fact, she was “flattered” that the response to the original generated interest in remaking it for new audiences.
“I was quite perturbed when I heard that… sort of possessive, like, ‘Wait a second, that’s my role! But, you know, I actually am flattered… that [The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is] considered, you know, a classic in that sense. I mean, A Star Is Born was remade like three times. It’s a great story. So I think I’m sort of flattered that the movie that we created — and to think that that was a spec script written by [Amanda Silver], I forget where she was in college, I think USC — that just was such a great structure that appealed to so many people. So I’m actually curious to see what they do with it, after I got over my initial possessiveness. And I hope they do it justice. I hope that, for their sake, it’s good, because ours really is pretty damn good.”
De Mornay played the nanny in the original film directed by Curtis Hanson, based on a script by Amanda Silver. Armed with a $12 million budget, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle went on to gross $88 million at the worldwide box office. Considering it was a commercial success with solid reviews from critics, it’s honestly shocking it has taken this long for a remake. Fans of the original can see if the new film lives up to the cult classic when it arrives on Hulu on October 22.
