Morfydd Clark Shares the Biggest Difference Between Filming Season 1 & 2

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has shown off its immense budget throughout the series, with breathtaking shots of the New Zealand area where it was filmed. The series, which debuted on Sept. 1 earlier this year, is undeniably grand in scale leading to more than two years spent filming the first season alone.

Fans are hoping for a faster turnaround between seasons 1 and 2 of The Rings of Power, as multiple years of filming would set the project back quite a bit with the VFX and post-production work required. During an interview with Collider, Galadriel actress Morfydd Clark discussed filming the first season and why the second may be a bit different.

“But the filming of season one was just so particular because we were in New Zealand, there was a pandemic, no one could leave, we had no other life but the show. And as an artist that was quite an incredible thing to do. To be able to be kind of … we were just totally obsessed and it won’t ever be like that again. I feel just so, that’s why it’s so exciting this final episode coming out, this was two years of work because of the context in which it was filmed and it was actually all consuming in a wonderful way.”

Filming is moving away from New Zealand in the upcoming second season, as The Rings of Power crew moves to the UK. This will be a significant switch for the franchise, as both Peter Jackson’s trilogies, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, were filmed in New Zealand. Hopefully, the production and beauty of the second season will be on par with the first and the films that came before it.

Morfydd Clark Has One Secret to Get Her Back in Character

Prime Video/Empire

Though it’s been quite a while since Morfydd Clark was on The Rings of Power set, the actress tells Collider there’s one thing that always brings her back to Galadriel. It’s not the costumes, set design, or reading her script. Instead, Clark says riding on horseback has forged a special connection between herself and her character.

“I feel the biggest thing for me in terms of getting to understand her and feel like her was riding, I’d never ridden before this and it feels magical. And so I’ve been really lucky to be able to get back to riding before starting season two. And that’s a really great door into it all, into Middle Earth and its entirety really, I think the horses.”

Though filming has already begun in the UK, it could be a year or two until we see The Rings of Power arriving on Prime Video. The series is a lot to handle between the lengthy shoot, the enormous amount of VFX work, and the post-production processes. Of course, the crew wants to capitalize on the first season’s popularity as soon as possible, though we may not see the show till 2024 at the earliest. For now, fans can enjoy the entirety of the first season, streaming now on Prime Video.
