Sony Pictures Animation has provided our first look at the upcoming Netflix series, Agent King. The series will follow Elvis Presley, but not the Elvis Presley you’re familiar with, as this animated take on the King of Rock & Roll has traded in his jumpsuit for a jetpack when he joins a secret government spy program to help battle the dark forces that threaten the country.
Sony Pictures Animation shared an image from the series, which shows the animated Elvis looking fiercely determined while wearing all black. Agent King finds the music icon inducted into a secret government agency and becoming a spy, with the series expected to include all the action and espionage that the synopsis suggests. Of course, the King will continue to hold down his day job as the “King of Rock and Roll.”

The image was revealed as part of the Annecy Festival, with a trailer to Agent King also reportedly unveiled. Though it has not yet made its way online. Agent King has been described as “an adult-oriented show,” with Agent King Character Designer Rob Valley, who dedicated endless hours to drawing Elvis, explaining how he approached bringing Elvis’ incredibly recognizable face to life with animation. “I wanted him to look adorable and dangerous,” Valley said regarding designing Elvis for Agent King.
Priscilla Presley, the ex-wife of Elvis Presley, and John Eddie are on board to executive produce Agent King alongside Authentic Brands Group’s Jamie Salter. Mike Arnold will serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer. No cast has yet been revealed.
Despite being an executive producer, Priscilla Presley has some concerns over the direction of Agent King, and is worried about the depiction of Elvis in the Netflix show. “I read the scripts. I worry about the scripts because it’s an adult animation. So you’re leaving it to Sony and Netflix because that’s who has it. Sometimes the script comes in and I go, ‘God, Elvis never would say that!’”
Elvis Presley Will First Be Portrayed in Live-Action by Austin Butler
Warner Bros. Pictures
Before audiences meet this fictionalized version of Elvis in Agent King, he will first be portrayed in live-action by Austin Butler in director Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic, Elvis. Due for release later this month, Elvis chronicles the life and career of singer and actor Elvis Presley (Austin Butler), beginning the tale from his early days as a child to becoming a rock and roll and movie star. The movie will center on his complex relationship with his manager Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks.
In contrast to Agent King, Priscilla Presley was very impressed with the portrayal of Elvis in the biopic. “Austin Butler, who played Elvis is outstanding. Halfway through the film Jerry and I looked at each other and said WOW!!!” she said after a private screening of the movie. “Bravo to him…he knew he had big shoes to fill. He was extremely nervous playing this part. I can only imagine.” She concluded, “The story, as we all know, does not have a happy ending. But I think you will understand a little bit more of Elvis’ journey, penned by a director who put his heart and soul and many hours into this film.”
Elvis is scheduled to be theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures on June 24, 2022, and has received positive reviews from critics, most of whom have heaped praise on Butler’s central performance. Agent King, meanwhile, has not yet been given a release date.
