RoboCop Movie and TV Series Now in the Works at Amazon

Dead or alive, you’re being rebooted. Following the acquisition of MGM Studios by Amazon back in March 2022, a RoboCop reboot is now reportedly (via Deadline) in the works, with both a movie and television series now being discussed. Further information about the future of RoboCop remains scarce at present, but it certainly sounds like we will be seeing a lot of him going forward.

“Robocop also is being talked about for both film and TV, with a TV show possibly first,” reads the report, with Amazon looking at both “A-list creative auspices” who have reached out to them “to inquire about adapting” specific MGM IP that they are fans with the hopes of potentially helming such projects. Amazon Studios will also be looking into their own talent pool for possible stars and directors on the likes of the RoboCop movie and series.

But it’s not just the Robot cop that Amazon is now looking into rebooting and expanding upon, with Amazon Studios now ready to delve into the iconic intellectual properties that they acquired through their purchase of MGM. These possible projects include both movie and serial treatment for the likes of Stargate, Legally Blonde, Barbershop, The Magnificent Seven, Fame, Pink Panther and The Thomas Crown Affair.

After lengthy negotiations, Amazon purchased MGM last year, with the studio paying a hefty price of $8.5 billion for the privilege. “MGM has a nearly century-long legacy of producing exceptional entertainment, and we share their commitment to delivering a broad slate of original films and television shows to a global audience,” Amazon’s Mike Hopkins, who leads the way on Amazon Studios and streaming service Prime Video, said at the time. “We welcome MGM employees, creators, and talent to Prime Video and Amazon Studios, and we look forward to working together to create even more opportunities to deliver quality storytelling to our customers.”

RoboCop Remains One of the Most Iconic Figures in Science Fiction

Orion Pictures

First introduced way back in 1987, RoboCop remains one of the most iconic and recognizable figures in science fiction. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, the first RoboCop takes place in a crime-ridden, near-future Detroit, and centers on police officer Alex Murphy (played by Peter Weller) who, after being brutally murdered by a gang of ruthless criminals, is resurrected by the mega-corporation Omni Consumer Products as a cyborg law enforcer.

Now unaware of his former life, RoboCop follows Murphy as he slowly attempts to regain some semblance of his humanity, all while the movie takes satirical swipes at consumerism, capitalist greed, corporate corruption, and hyper-violent action movies.

RoboCop has already been thoroughly franchised, spawning two far lesser sequels in RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, as well as several TV series, an animated show, various video games and comic books. RoboCop was rebooted in 2014 by director José Padilha and star Joel Kinnaman, but it sadly failed to catch the same lightning in a bottle.

Only time will tell whether Amazon fares any better with their multiple RoboCop projects.
