Sarah Michelle Gellar Is ‘Grateful’ Cruel Intentions TV Series Fell Through

A planned TV series continuation of Cruel Intentions never made it to air, but it’s clearly a good thing for original star Sarah Michelle Gellar. Back in 2016, NBC had ordered a pilot for a Cruel Intentions show which would have been set 17 years after the events of the film. It had Gellar reprising her role as Kathryn Merteuil as she tries to take control of Valmont International following the death of Ryan Phillipe’s character, Sebastian Valmont.

For better or for worse, NBC passed on the series, though it was reported at the time that Sony would shop the Cruel Intentions show to other networks. That never quite materialized and it would seem that the series has died in development hell. In a new interview with the New York Times, Gellar says she’s happy that the show didn’t work out at NBC as it’s a concept that would be better suited for a streaming platform. Here’s what she said when asked about the ill-fated pilot.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“I don’t know. That was a whole crazy time. Nothing against NBC, but Cruel Intentions is straight streaming. On the first day, I was like, ‘This isn’t working.’ It’s just not a network show. And if it is a network show, it’s not my Cruel Intentions. So, I was actually grateful.”

There may be a new series based on Cruel Intentions that is in the works, though this version wouldn’t be one that features Gellar. It was reported in 2021 that a reboot series was in the works at IMDb TV, the free streaming service that is now known as Amazon Freevee. The series will reportedly be set in Washington DC, following two step-siblings planning to seduce the Vice President’s daughter. Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman (Amazon’s I Know What You Did Last Summer) are penning the series.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Will Be Back on the Screen in Wolf Pack

20th Television

After her run on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar will return to the genre with a main role in Wolf Pack, a Teen Wolf spinoff series. She plays arson investigator Kristin Ramsey, described as a “highly regarded expert in her field and no stranger to personal loss, brought in by authorities to catch the teenage arsonist who started a massive wildfire which may have also led to the reawakening of a supernatural predator terrorizing Los Angeles.”

Wolf Pack also marks Gellar’s live-action return to the small screen after an appearance as herself in The Big Bang Theory in 2019. Last year, she was attached to a Prime Video pilot for a series dubbed Hot Pink, but it was passed on by the streamer. Gellar’s voice can be heard in the animated Netflix series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, which was debuted in 2021.
