‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ Has Already Achieved An Incredible Domestic Milestone After One Week

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is climbing its way up the box office charts and into the hearts of families everywhere. The blue speedster is proving to be quite the money-maker, but the star-studded cast definitely hasn’t hurt the ticket sales. While the family-friendly film has already broken an odd Guinness World Record by projecting a massive shadow of Keanu Reeves’ character Shadow the Hedgehog at its premiere, the animated and live-action hybrid movie is also breaking records at the box office.

Collider reports that the third Sonic film earned $60 million, claiming the top spot at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, beating Mufasa: The Lion King by more than $20 million after fighting for the top spot. The video game adaptation also amassed another $27 million during the week of Christmas, making it one of the 25 highest-grossing movies of 2024 in the U.S. and catapulting its domestic box office total to $87 million. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 surpassed other major films of the year like Mean Girls and Longlegs, with more time to climb up the list as it enters its second week in U.S. theaters.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continues to impress as it became one of the top 12 highest-grossing video game movies ever, narrowly surpassing the 1999 classic, Pokemon: The First Movie. The film, featuring Ben Schwartz as the title hedgehog, is also on track to make back its reported budget of $122 million within the next week as the film enters international theaters. The numbers are promising for Sonic fans and producers alike. Could this be the beginning of a long film career for Sonic and his buddies? As long as producers can keep the story fresh, Sonic fans will be in theaters to watch the little runner’s adventures.

What’s Next for The Fan-Favorite Hedgehog?

Sonic’s world is growing alongside the video game franchise, as multiple new characters have been introduced, like Reeves’ character Shadow and Jim Carrey’s second character, Professor Gerald Robotnik. However, with a whole list of video games and crossovers to pull from, the Sonic film franchise could make its successful run even longer. While Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, and Colleen O’Shaughnessy have all returned to reprise their iconic roles in Sonic 3, there’s still plenty of room for other animated characters to join the cast, like the most recent addition of John Wick actor Reeves in his franchise debut as Shadow.

Just when you think you’ve seen all of Sonic the Hedgehog’s tales, a new series comes along, introduces fresh characters, and expands the Sonic-verse.

James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and the legendary Carrey have also returned to the franchise, which reinforces the star power by not only having an impressive voice cast, but also a packed live action cast. The franchise balances the best of both worlds, and fans can’t wait to see what’s next. With Sonic the Hedgehog 4 already confirmed and enthusiastically backed by lead actor Schwartz, it doesn’t seem like there’s any end in sight for the blue hedgehog and his furry pals. There’s still time to go see the next installment of Sonic’s adventures in theaters and support the franchise.
