Sony and Amazon Studios continue to expand their Spider-Man universe, with a live-action Spider-Man Noir series now in the works. According to Variety, the moody version of Spidey will lead his own show courtesy of Amazon, written by Mortal Kombat and The Lost City scribe Oren Uziel, who has developed the show alongside Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

As per the report, the Spider-Man Noir series will follow “an older, grizzled superhero in 1930s New York City.” Sources have also revealed that the show will be “set in its own universe” and that “the main character will not be Peter Parker.”

Spider-Man Noir, who is Peter Parker in the comics, was first introduced back in 2009. Part of the Marvel Noir universe, aka Earth-90214, this alternate version of the superhero is a noir-themed take on the beloved character and fights crime in New York during the Great Depression. Unlike his original namesake, Spider-Man Noir was bitten by a spider that emerged from a spider-god idol while attempting to bring down a smuggling ring. But, similar to the OG Peter Parker, Noir was imbued with super-human abilities like a spider, becoming a masked vigilante and waging a one-man war on crime.

Spider-Man Noir often battles alternate versions of familiar villains, including Norman Osborn, but he sometimes fights real-world threats, such as the Nazis. A significant difference between Noir and Earth-616 Spider-Man is his pessimism and gloomy outlook, as well as the brutal methods he uses against his enemies. All of which should make for a very different Spidey outing. The Spider-Man Noir series is being planned as part of Sony and Amazon’s Spider-Universe, which includes Silk: Spider Society, with several other projects reportedly in development.

Spider-Man Noir was famously voiced by Nicolas Cage in the 2018 Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Here’s hoping the actor can be persuaded to reprise the role for the live-action series…

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Will Introduce a Whole Host of Spider-People

Sony Pictures

While Spider-Man Noir will not appear in the upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the animated follow-up will introduce a whole host of other Spider-People from across the multiverse.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will pick up with hero Miles Morales living his life as Spider-Man following the first movie’s multiversal shenanigans. Miles is soon reunited with Gwen Stacy before Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero, so he can save the people he loves most.

If battling a huge ensemble of Spider-Variants, including Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman, and Daniel Kaluuya as Hobart “Hobie” Brown aka Spider-Punk, were not already enough of a challenge, Miles will also have to contend with Jason Schwartzman as The Spot, a bad guy whose body is covered by interdimensional portals that allow him to travel through different universes.

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released on June 2.
