Best-selling author Stephen King likes the Paramount+ crime drama Mayor of Kingstown. He really, really likes it. The series, by co-creator Taylor Sheridan, stars Jeremy Renner and is currently in the midst of its third season. The Carrie author took to his X (formerly Twitter) account, where he is quite active, to sing the show’s praises and offer random comments on it.
The series centers around the McLusky family, led by Mike (Renner), who acts as a power broker between the criminal underworld, law enforcement, and prison guards in the fictional Michigan city of Kingstown, home to seven prisons that stir the local economy. There’s family drama, gang violence, prison riots, mobsters, and corrupt cops, with multiple storylines involving over a dozen major characters. All of it certainly has King’s attention.
King appears to have started his Mayor of Kingstown marathon on the Fourth of July, as that’s when he started tweeting about the series, proclaiming “I love this show,” while also admitting that “I have no f*****g clue what’s going on.”
King then pointed out the innate cool factor of Mike’s Lincoln Continental, which is almost a character in itself, as Renner is in the car for most of the show. He also threw out some love for actor Tobi Bamtefa, who plays the drug kingpin “Bunny” on the show.
The author even threw some sideways praise at series co-creator Hugh Dillon, who plays Detective Ian Ferguson.
Jeremy Renner got plenty of love from King, who pointed out that the Oscar-nominated actor made a miraculous recovery from a near-fatal snowplow accident to star in another season.
Finally, King pointed out the show’s love for profanity, which is a trademark of a Taylor Sheridan series.

After Jeremy Renner had a near-fatal snowplow accident on New Year’s Day 2023 near his home, doctors doubted he would live a normal life again, much less return to his acting career. Not only did Renner defy the odds, he returned to Mayor of Kingstown for season three, resuming production in January of this year. Other Mayor of Kingstown cast members include Taylor Handley as Kyle McLusky (Mike’s younger brother and a cop), Derek Webster, Emma Laird, Aidan Gillan, and Dianne Weist.
