The heroes in a half-shell are coming back on the small screen in Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Paramount+. A spin-off from Seth Rogen’s successful movie reboot, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, the expansion of the TMNT universe revealed its first footage in a brand new trailer, complete with an all-new animation style that keeps the character designs of the movie but brings it into the 2D arena. As always, this change of appearance has fans divided.

This new series, confirmed in July 2023 with a two-season order for Paramount+, is poised to dive deeper into the adventures of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael, offering fans a fresh perspective on their heroic escapades in New York City. The first glimpse of the series through its teaser reveals a significant shift to a 2D animated style, which, as well as setting itself apart from Mutant Mayhem, most likely brings with it a more TV-friendly budget than the unique brand of CGI used in the movie.

The teaser’s promise of a summer release on Paramount+ has generated considerable anticipation among fans, although the new art style is once again the one thing that no one is able to quite agree on. Check out the trailer below for yourself:

Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Spilts Fans With 2D Animation Style

Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles promises to introduce new threats and revisit old allies, expanding the lore established in Mutant Mayhem and setting the stage for its upcoming sequel. The return of Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon as the voices of the turtles ensures continuity with the film, and takes the same kind of approach James Gunn is planning for his cross-medium DCU.

For many fans, Mutant Mayhem was one of the best TMNT offerings for some time, with Seth Rogen delivering his vision of the franchise as both a creator and a fan of the franchise itself. While this can sometimes work – as with Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe: Revolution – other times it can end up backfiring though self-indulgence and the occasional need to mess with the formula – as with Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe Revelation.

As executive producer, as well as the voice of Bebop in the Mutant Mayhem, Rogen managed to navigate the tricky world of Turtle fandom better than most, although that dramatic art style was not to everyone’s liking. Now with Tales of theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles translating Mutant Mayhem’s designs to a 2D format, the debates can start all over again.

Related 10 Reasons Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Should Stick to Animated Movies TMNT’s latest hit, Mutant Mayhem, is only a part of the reason why all projects should be animated going forward.

On the back of the trailer’s release, one X user commented “Probably won’t watch but I dig the art style.” Another concurred with, “I love the art style, it genuinely looks to me like it could be the storyboards for the movie but come to life.”. A third added, “naaaaahh this art style is FIRE.”

However, there were many who just don’t get the new direction for the series. One less positive reaction reads, “A sequel to Mutant Mayhem with completely different animation? Hmm…..Man, even Mutant Mayhem was barely tolerable. I’m not too sure about this one..” Others commented on the unfinished look of the animation style, saying, “Liking the art style and the fact it’s 2D animation, but it’s so stiff and cheap looking. Excited but also a lil disappointed.”

All in all, despite the mixed reactions to the animation style, there seem to be many people just happy to see the franchise delivering more new content. Whether it will prove as successful as the Mutant Mayhem is something we will find out this summer when the series arrives on Paramount+
