The Boys Producer Teases Future Spinoffs Plans Following Gen V Success

Summary

  • The Boys universe expands with live-action series Gen V, exploring aspiring young superheroes and hinting at the potential for more spinoffs.
  • Gen V introduces new characters and stories to the dark superhero universe, but the priority for the franchise is maintaining high-quality content.
  • Producer Pavun Shetty emphasizes the importance of thoughtful storytelling and avoiding spinoffs for the sake of it, ensuring each show feels like a puzzle piece that fits into the larger universe.

The Boys universe expanded once again with Gen V, a new live-action series set in the same universe that explores young people who aspire to have a career in the world of superheroes. But this show could be just the beginning of a much larger franchise.

Released in 2019 and based on the comic books created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys has already become not only one of the biggest hits on Amazon Prime Video, but also one of the most acclaimed productions in the long list of comic books adaptations that have come to theaters and television in recent years. Due to its great success, in 2021 the first official spinoff of the show was released, titled The Boys Presents: Diabolical, a collection of animated episodes that expand the history of some characters or plots that were superficially explored in the main series.

Last month, Prime Video released the second spinoff of the franchise, Gen V. Unlike Diabolical, this new series was made in live-action format and is a direct complement to The Boys, showing a new facet of the disturbing and dark universe of the superheroes and the entire corrupt apparatus that surrounds them.

Gen V introduces a vast new gallery of characters and therefore many new stories to explore in addition to those presented in The Boys, which would open the possibility for many more spinoffs. And although it is not ruled out that new series may arrive in the future, the priority of the team behind the franchise is to maintain the high level of quality.

The Boys Will Not Have Any More Spinoffs Unless They Are Necessary

Amazon Prime

There is no doubt that fans have responded very well to both Diabolical and Gen V, which would be a good incentive for Prime Video to invest in creating more stories within the same universe to squeeze as much out of it as possible. However, that doesn’t seem to be a priority.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, producer Pavun Shetty spoke about potential future spinoffs, making it clear that what matters most to them is continuing to deliver quality shows:

“We’re lucky that fans love the show so much and there’s real anticipation for Gen V, and there’s a lot of characters to build upon. There’s a lot of different areas from the books across time periods that we could really capitalize on. But, I think the most important thing for us there is that we are really diligent and thoughtful about what we do next. We’d love to have multiple shows, but I think audiences are really savvy and sophisticated, and I think they understand when there’s a reason a show is coming out for the proper reasons and there’s a real story to tell and it feels of the same world, but different. I think they can sniff out when it’s just a show for a show’s sake, and so we are really thinking about what the next show could be and how it can be thoughtful and fit into the universe and feel like it’s a puzzle piece that fits in with everything else, but is not just a show for show’s sake.”

Gen V premieres its fifth episode this week, keeping fans of The Boys entertained while they wait for the fourth season, which has not been able to begin filming due to the actors’ strike in Hollywood.
