Trevor Noah Didn’t Tell Anyone About Leaving The Daily Show Before On-Air Announcement

We are fast approaching the final episode of The Daily Show hosted by Trevor Noah, as the comedian will be making his exit from the show on Dec. 8. This follows Noah making the announcement that he was leaving on the Sept. 29 episode, which he said almost casually before cutting to a commercial break. He remarked that his “time is up” after seven years, revealing his plans to very soon depart from his job as the show’s host.

Noah and the show’s crew spoke out more about the situation in a new article at THR. It’s noted in the story that some of the gasps heard on-air when Noah made the announcement had come from the show’s actual crew members in addition to people in the studio audience. Showrunner Jen Flanz recalled the moment as it happened, noting to head writer Zhubin Parang that they were going to have to cut the unscripted moment.

“He starts talking and talking, and I look at Zhubin, like, ‘What is he doing? We’re going to have to edit this,’” Flanz remembers, saying that it felt like they lost “all feeling in our bodies.”

When the taping reached its act break, Flanz and Zhubin approached Noah at the desk. Flanz asked if they were really going to air the comment, remarking that Noah had “went heavy,” but all that he was able to say was, “I’m sorry.” Noah told THR that he chose to reveal the news this way as he simply wanted everyone to find out at once.

“Part of the reason I did it that way is because I didn’t want anybody to be the person who then tells somebody else, who then tells somebody else, who then tells somebody else,” Noah explains. “And this is where we create the thing. [The show] is where we’re together, our space, and so for me, it felt like the most natural way to tell everybody at the same time.”

Who Will Replace Trevor Noah on The Daily Show?

Comedy Central

The reported plan for The Daily Show is to go off the air after Noah’s final episode before returning in January. At that time, it’s expected that there will be rotating hosts before a permanent host is named, similar to what happened with Jeopardy! after the passing of Alex Trebek. Roy Wood Jr., one of the show’s current correspondents, is said to be a frontrunner. However, he’s refusing to give serious thought to the possibility until after Noah is out the door.

“It’s too overwhelming, and I don’t want to have that on my mind,” Wood said.

For now, fans will first have to prepare to say farewell to Noah on The Daily Show, but people will see him soon enough with his continued work in comedy. Noah also says he wants to get more into acting as well as filmmaking, revealing he has some screenplays in the works. We’ll see what comes next for him after he airs his final episode on Dec. 8, 2022.
