As fans await more news about a future installment in the Star Trek movie universe — specifically in the Kelvin timeline of the franchise — one of its stars has made a hopeful revelation. Zachary Quinto, who played Spock in the J.J. Abrams-directed reboot trilogy, revealed that he’s up for a return, and is doing everything possible to make a sequel. If Star Trek 4 gets made at some point, Quinto should be on the gratitude list.
Quinto spoke with Collider recently while promoting Season 2 of the series Brilliant Minds. Before debuting as Spock in 2009’s Star Trek, Quinto had a robust television career that included his breakout performance on the sci-fi adventure series Heroes as a notable villain. When asked whether he would like to return to the Trek universe, Quinto emphatically said yes:
“I would absolutely love to do another Star Trek movie. I don’t understand why we haven’t done one yet, but hopefully, now that the Skydance and Paramount merger is moving forward, Skydance was the financier of all the Star Trek movies that we’ve done so far and have been great partners in those films, and I would love to revisit it. I think all of us would.
“It’s been 10 years since we made the last movie, and nine years since it came out, and I do think that it would be a really wonderful way to close that chapter of the story and the characters that we’ve all come to love and come to enjoy inhabiting as much as we have. I think it would be really wonderful.”
Although it certainly takes more than just an e-mail, Quinto revealed to Collider that he has contacted J.J. Abrams about Star Trek 4. Given that Abrams remains a producer of the franchise, whether or not he chooses to direct the sequel, his involvement seems inevitable. Quinto said the following about what happened after he reached out:
“I actually just emailed J.J. this week to say, ‘Hey, this would be really exciting.’ I think fans would be really open to it and really welcome a final movie. We’ve been talking about it for long enough that it seems like time to move it forward. So, I’m beating that drum as much as I can. I think it would be really great to do a fourth movie, and let’s make it happen. There are so many possibilities in the stories we could tell. I think there’s something really wonderful about coming back to characters that we all have a history with, and we all have a real deep connection to, and a fond relationship with. I hope that we can, and I hope that we do.”
More Cast Members Could Return for ‘Star Trek 4’

Quinto says he wants to return for Star Trek 4, but he isn’t the only one whose return feels like an essential piece of the puzzle. Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldaña, John Cho, and Karl Urban are among the performers who could also sign up. Anton Yelchin sadly passed away years ago, and his character Chekov should be respectfully retired, but the most important one of all, Chris Pine, a.k.a. Captain Kirk in the Kelvin timeline, has yet to announce his return.
When addressing his relationship with the rest of the cast, Quinto seemed hopeful for their return as well. We’re not saying that Star Trek 4 is a reality, but after Skydance Media’s acquisition of Paramount and their IPs, there’s a glimmer of hope. More hope than before, at least — and Quinto is also quite optimistic about the future:
“I’m still incredibly close with Chris, I stay in touch with the rest of the cast as well. I think all of us would welcome the chance to work together again. It was a really fun trilogy of movies, and to bring it back around one more time and get the old gang back together, I think, would be really incredible.”
