The Next Karate Kid Star Hilary Swank Dodges Cobra Kai Return Question

When it comes to Hilary Swank possibly reprising her role from The Next Karate Kid for an appearance in Cobra Kai, fans have long been asking, “Will she or won’t she?” While the Cobra Kai creators have expressed their desire to have Swank’s Julie Pierce show up at some point in the series, it’s not something that has yet materialized five seasons into the show. Perhaps we could see this happen in a sixth season on Netflix, but even if the Cobra Kai team is interested in Julie’s return, Swank would still have to agree.

Per Deadline, the question came up with Swank during a TCA presentation for her upcoming ABC series Alaska Daily. It was not a surprise as there were many fans hoping for a surprise appearance in the recently-released fifth season, and the speculation continues as to whether it will ever happen. Unfortunately, Swank didn’t have an answer, as she wanted to keep the focus on her new show.

“I was told that I’m supposed to only keep it to Alaska Daily, so I guess that question is for another time.”

Jon Hurwitz, one of the show’s creators, previously talked about the possibility of Julie Pierce showing up after season 4 was released. In an interview with Fandom, Hurwitz couldn’t promise that Swank would appear in Cobra Kai but made it clear that the show’s creative team is a big fan of the actress, suggesting they are at least hoping that it happens eventually. As Hurwitz put it:

“All we can say about her is we love Hilary Swank. We think she’s a phenomenal actress and we love her character in this franchise. She was taught by Mr. Miyagi and she’s somebody who is important to the Karate Kid universe. We can’t say if she’ll return, we can’t say how she’d return if she was going to return. We can say that we talk about her and maybe we’ve met her, maybe we’ve worked with her, maybe we haven’t. We can’t tell you anything! It’s gonna continue to be a question until either she shows up or the series ends.”

For Now, Catch Hilary Swank In Alaska Daily

ABC

Swank serves as an executive producer of the ABC series Alaska Daily in addition to starring. She plays an investigative journalist looking for a fresh start on life by relocating to Anchorage. Swank referred to the character as an underdog to explain why she was so drawn to Alaska Daily.

“You know, I love people and I love what makes them tick. And I love people who persevere through adversity. I love outsiders. I love the underdog. What makes us all one person? At the heart of these stories, all everyone wants is to be seen and everyone deserves justice. I think a lot of the roles that I choose have that theme in one way or another and I feel like Eileen Fitzgerald is a truth seeker. She’s an investigative truth seeker, and she wants to make sure that justice is done and that people see the truth in situations. I feel that that aligns with what people in the world want right now, they don’t want to be lied to anymore.”

Alaska Daily will premiere on ABC on Oct. 6 at 10 p.m.
