On 16 May 1943, Johnny took part in OPERATION CHASTISE “The Dambusters Raid”. The plan was to destroy a number of Adolf Hitler’s dams in western Germany. This would disrupt water and power supplies to factories in the Ruhr valley and deliver a devastating blow against the Nazi industrial war machine. With great effect. In May 1943 Johnny was a 21-year-old bomb aimer in 617 squadron and on that night of the 16th “The Dambusters raid” Johnny and his crew were briefed to attack the Sorpe dam and as “BOMB AIMER” Johnny was responsible for dropping the specially designed Bouncing bomb.
After the Dambusters operation, Johnny went on to fly a further 19 operations with 617 squadron. He then operated as an instructor in Bomber Command until the end of the Second World War. After the Second World War, he served with the 100 Squadron and 120 Squadron Coastal Command. In 1962, after a period in the Far East and a final UK tour Johnny retired from the RAF as Squadron Leader.
