Presidents of the Unites States of America Respond to Larry David’s Peaches Scorn on Curb Your Enthusiasm

Larry David is no strange to causing controversy on his show Curb Your Enthusiasm. One might even say he revels in it. And so, when he took a shot at 90s grunge band Presidents of the United States of America and their song “Peaches”, it should have come as no surprise to anyone.

In the episode, Larry David attended a rock concert that actor Dylan O’Brien performed at. During the concert, O’Brien performed a cover of Presidents OF The United States Of America’s ’90s track ‘Peaches’, after which David spoke to the actor backstage and asked: “What would prompt a person to sing such an idiotic song?”

Dylan O’Brien’s character replied, “Because the way it’s aged 20 years later. Do you see how relevant it is now?”

Now, the band’s front man, Chris Ballew, has issued a pithy response to the jab. In the post on Instagram, Ballew included the clip from the episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm with the following quote: “I am complete now that I have received Larry David’s scorn.” Check out the clip here along with Ballew’s response.

The Presidents of the United States of America (occasionally referred to as PUSA, PotUSA, The Presidents of the USA or simply The Presidents) was an American grunge band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1993. The three-piece group’s initial line-up consisted of vocalist and bassist Chris Ballew, drummer Jason Finn, and guitarist Dave Dederer; Dederer eventually left the group and was replaced by Andrew McKeag. The band released six studio albums and was best known for its hits “Lump” and “Peaches”, released in 1995 and 1996 respectively. Another well-known song was “Kitty”, which helped popularize their self-titled debut album. The Presidents privately disbanded in 2015, and the news was made public a year later.

“Peaches” although not their biggest hit, did chart on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, climbing to 29 on that chart, making it the only single from their debut album to make that highly coveted chart. The song is about a man who talks about going to the country and eating a lot of peaches. It also talks about canned peaches and peach pie. It describes the experience of crushing a rotten peach, taking a nap by the roots of a tree, and sticking a finger into the flesh of a peach. Chris Ballew said that he wrote “Peaches” about a girl he once had a crush on. He allegedly wrote this song after sitting under a peach tree she had in her yard while waiting for her to arrive, so that he could finally let her know that he liked her. Don’t remember the song? Watch it here.

Curb Your Enthusiasm, of course, is Larry David’s series in which he plays a fictional version of himself as a retired TV writer and producer. The show had ended in 2011, but was brought back for new seasons in 2017. Currently in Season 11, there has been no decision yet on a renewal for Season 12. New episodes air on HBO and HBOMax.
