Gentefied Becomes First Netflix Series Cancellation of 2022

Netflix’s Latino comedy-drama Gentefied has become the latest series to be canceled by the streamer after two seasons. Produced by America Ferrera, the JJ Soria and Carlos Santos starring show premiered its second season in November last year, but having failed to feature in the platform’s top ten chart in the last three months, Netflix has decided to pull the plug on the highly-rated show. Following the lives of three Mexican American cousins who tackle gentrification, family separation, babies and borders as well as trying to stop their grandfather’s taco shop from going out of business, the 2020 debut of the show’s first season gained a high critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but failing to bring in high viewer numbers through its new episodes ultimately led to its demise as reported earlier today by Deadline.

While Netflix has been attempting to add to their Latino and Hispanic talent pool, it seems that they will now be searching for another addition to the line-up after pulling the plug on Gentefied. With the show failing to make an impact among the vast number of big and popular offerings of the last year such as Squid Game, Bridgerton and The Witcher, Netflix has once again come under criticism from some of their subscribers for the number of shows that fail to make it past one or two seasons. However, in the defense of the streamer, their renewal rate of 60% for scripted shows with more than two seasons sits roughly in line with the likes of HBO and CBS with scores of 68% and 70% respectively.

Gentefied Won With The Critics But Ultimately Failed With Audiences.

When Gentefied premiered on Netflix in February 2020 it appeared that the series was off to a winning start, gaining instant acclaim from critics with a 92% rating from 24 reviews. In all, the consensus was that “If at times a bit blunt, Gentefied’s gente-centric approach to the realities of gentrification is as strikingly personal as it is hilariously relatable.” The series was praised for having a voice that was “distinctive and assured” and received additional plaudits for managing to bring the Spanish and English sides of its narrative into focus both separately and in coherence with each other.

The second season manages to improve on its critic score, landing a 100% rating, but from only five reviews, the low number of which manages to tell its own story as to why the show has not been renewed for a third season. The world of streaming is not as simple as network television, with subscribers being able to choose where and when they watch programs and movies. It, therefore, comes down to a tough choice based on viewer numbers, usually over a thirty day period, along with costing considerations and those critic scores as to which shows make the grade and which don’t.

Gentefied was singled out last month as one of the shows unlikely to see out 2022 on Netflix, and it came to pass that it has become the first casualty of the year on the platform. Other titles that failed to make a huge impact and are facing an uncertain future include zombie thriller Black Summer, award-winning Master of None and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest spin-off series Ratched, which has been waiting a long time for its already green-lit second season to go into production, but with the cast currently tied up elsewhere, there is every chance that we may never get to see it.
