Collider reports that the third Sonic film earned $60 million, claiming the top spot at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, beating Mufasa: The Lion King by more than $20 million after fighting for the top spot. The video game adaptation also amassed another $27 million during the week of Christmas, making it one of the 25 highest-grossing movies of 2024 in the U.S. and catapulting its domestic box office total to $87 million. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 surpassed other major films of the year like Mean Girls and Longlegs, with more time to climb up the list as it enters its second week in U.S. theaters.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continues to impress as it became one of the top 12 highest-grossing video game movies ever, narrowly surpassing the 1999 classic, Pokemon: The First Movie. The film, featuring Ben Schwartz as the title hedgehog, is also on track to make back its reported budget of $122 million within the next week as the film enters international theaters.
