The Boys Season 3 Poster Introduces Soldier Boy and Payback

Payback has arrived in the new poster for The Boys. Set to arrive on Prime Video in June, the third season has been very highly anticipated by fans. Many are stoked to see the arrival of Payback, a superhero group that was essentially the world’s most elite team of superheroes in the years before Vought assembled the Seven. They’re led by Soldier Boy, a Captain America-like superhero portrayed by Supernatural star Jensen Ackles.

In the new poster, which is designed to look like a traditional movie poster design, Soldier Boy stands front and center with the other members of Payback behind him. The superheroes’ names are listed as cast members of the faux poster for the fictional Payback movie, as it has been established in prior seasons that the superhero characters often play themselves in movies about their adventures. This reveals the other Payback members’ names as Crimson Countess, TNT (Tommy & Tessa), Mindstorm, Airburst, Gunpowder, and Black Noir. Of course, we know that Black Noir now serves as a member of the Seven.

“I mean all of them [are important]! I mean I think they all get amazing things to do,” showrunner Eric Kripke told The Illuminerdi about the group. “I mean season 3’s fun because it’s not just about Soldier Boy, but it’s about the team he was a part of which is called Payback. And Laurie Holden plays Crimson Countess and there’s a bunch of other heroes who are amazing. So, sort of seeing who was the Seven before the Seven. And what was life like for Vought? In the history of Vought what was it like in the 60s and 70s and 80s? To dig into the history of the world, not just the present has been a lot of fun.”

The official Twitter account for The Boys tweeted the new poster just ahead of the weekend. They also noted that the poster “may or may not make more sense when we drop the trailer Monday.” So we can expect more to be unveiled with new footage in a trailer coming in on Monday to kick off the week. For now, you can take a look at the new poster artwork below.

Payback Will Serve As a Threat to Homelander

In the original comic books, which were created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, Soldier Boy was depicted as a bit of a bumbling coward, seemingly of no real threat to a powerful Supe like Homelander (Antony Starr). He will be given a makeover for the TV series adaptation, reimagined as someone who showrunner Eric Kripke has referred to as the “John Wayne of superheroes.” He was Vought’s first superhero and was the first to take the world by storm. It sounds like Homelander has met his match with Soldier Boy, as Kripke promises Ackles’ character comes in as a major threat to The Seven.

“I think anyone expecting Jensen to show up and be a good guy, they will be disappointed. I’ll say that! [Laughs],” Kripke previously said soon after the casting was announced. “In the comics he’s mostly just kind of bumbling and subservient to Homelander, I would say. As we’re writing him in this, we’re getting to really talk about the history of Vought because he’s like John Wayne: He’s one of these guys that’s been around for decades of Vought history. And he was Homelander before Homelander, so he’s from a different era, but he’s got the ego and the ambition – it just comes across in a different way because he’s from a different time.”

The Boys will return when season 3 premieres on June 3, 2022, on Prime Video.
