One of LA’s Most Iconic Hotels Gets a Style Upgrade

There are few hotels more iconic than the Sunset Tower in West Hollywood. Designed in 1929 by architect Leland A. Bryant, the elegant Art Deco building was originally built as luxury apartments catering to celebrities and those who sought to bask in their star power. Among its former residents are Howard Hughes, John Wayne, Billie Burke, Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Paulette Goddard, Zasu Pitts, and even gangster Bugsy Siegel. It has also appeared in numerous Hollywood films including The Italian Job, Get Shorty, The Player, and Strange Days.

It was first converted into a hotel in 1988 and has changed hands (and names) numerous times since then, yet it remains one of Hollywood’s most recognizable and glamorous architectural landmarks.

Of course, every hotel needs a refresh every once in a while. Even the Art Deco jewel that is the Sunset Tower.

Cue Lulu and Georgia, a luxury interior design brand founded by Sara Sugarman in Los Angeles in 2012 and named after her father (George) and her grandfather (Lou). Over the past decade and a half Lulu and Georgia has racked up an impressive roster of celebrity fans including Mandy Moore, Este Haim, Kate Hudson, Nina Dobrev, Jasmine Tookes, Sara and Erin Foster, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Stassi Schroeder.

Their task for the Sunset Tower: reimagining Duke’s, the hotel’s celebrated private event space, through their own signature design perspective. Led by acclaimed interior designer Lisa Koch, the results are pretty lovely.

“Sunset Tower Hotel is the epitome of refined glamour and thoughtful design,” says Sugarman. “In every detail, you can feel the time and intention poured into the space. I’m so excited for Lulu and Georgia to be part of the next chapter here.”
