Scream 6 Producer Says Franchise Could Go On Forever

If there is one hard and fast rule of horror movies, it is that there is always room for another sequel. While it appeared that the Scream franchise had ended with Scream 4, and especially following the death of director Wes Craven, the success of Scream (5) earlier this year has seen Scream 6 going straight into production with a release date of March 31, 2023. When it comes to the franchise’s future beyond that, producer Kevin Williamson had suggested that there is no reason the saga can’t go on forever.

Although there was some doubt about whether a Scream movie without Craven at the helm would work, the return of many original cast members, including Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell and David Arquette, helped make the fifth installment of the franchise a huge success. Now, while Scream 6 will be without Neve Campbell, it seems that Williamson has no doubt that there is a bright future for the series beyond next year’s edition. He told Collider:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Now [I do think it can go on]. I’ve been proven wrong repeatedly. Since this last one was such a pleasure… I also think one of the wonderful things about Scream is that there’s a different killer in every film. There’s [Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, or Freddy Krueger], they don’t go away. And Ghostface changes with every movie, so we have an opportunity to change the motive, change the story, and we can always twist and turn it since it [the original Scream] was always meant to be a game-changer.”

Scream 6 Will Be a Technical End to Wes Craven’s Second Scream Trilogy

The original plan for the Scream franchise was for the third installment in 2000 to bring the story to a close. However, 11 years later, Scream 4 arrived, and while it did not perform quite as well as expected, Wes Craven intended it to begin the second trilogy of movies. Of course, as the creator of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Craven wasn’t above reinvigorating a franchise, as he did with Freddy Kruger in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare when it seemed the knife-fingered demon was dead and buried.

Scream 6 is most notable for changing the location of the story, with Courteney Cox’s Gail Weathers and other Scream survivors leaving Woodsboro behind to head to the bright lights of New York City. This switch-up could certainly be the catalyst to keep the franchise moving into more movies, as leaving behind the familiar setting certainly brings a new flavor to the tried and tested, small-town atmosphere of the previous movies.

Of course, this time around, the film is without Neve Campbell, who, after appearing as the central character of all five Scream movies, decided to drop out of the project due to a pay dispute. How the loss of the film’s core character will play out is something that we will only find out when Scream 6 arrives in theaters in March 2023.
