Letitia Wright Rides Across the Wild West in Surrounded Trailer

Letitia Wright is ready to get away from Wakanda for a bit and get into the Wild West in the trailer for Surrounded, the new western from Anthony Mandler (Monster). The film also marks the last performance of the late Michael K. Williams.

Williams died back in 2021 at the young age of 55 years, after a long and powerful career. He was part of many Hollywood classics such as 12 Years a Slave, and big franchises like The Purge, Ghostbusters or RoboCop. In television, his last two titles were very acclaimed shows, Lovecraft Country and When They See Us, after participating in many popular shows over the years like Community or The Wire.

“Five years after the Civil War, freedwoman and former Buffalo Soldier Moses “Mo” Washington travels west to lay claim on a gold mine- the summation of years of toil for Mo and her community. It is a mean, dangerous world for an unaccompanied Black woman in 1870 America and so Mo travels into the deep frontier disguised as a man. After her stagecoach is ambushed by a group of murderous thieves, Mo is forced to hold legendary outlaw Tommy Walsh captive while the remaining surviving passengers seek out help. What ensues is a battle of wills, blurring the line between captor and captive, as they both try to survive the harsh western landscape.”

The cast also includes Jamie Bell, Jeffrey Donovan, and Brett Gelman. The script is written by Andrew Pagana, Justin Thomas, and Andrew Pagana.

Letitia Wright’s Past, Present and Future

The Marvel star started her career back in 2011, both in the small and the big screen. She was part of the action-drama Victim, and had small participation in three different tv shows, Holby City, Top Boy, and Random.

After that, she had a few other small roles, including an episode from Doctor Who in 2015. In 2017, her first big gig came with Black Mirror, where she played the main character in season four’s sixth and final episode, Black Museum. But her big break would come in 2018.

She joined the MCU to play T’Challa’s sister and Wakandan tech expert Shuri, playing the character in Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. That same year she starred in The Commuter with Liam Neeson and was part of the cast of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One.

Since then, she returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Endgame and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where she took the role of the titular hero after Chadwick Boseman’s passing. She was also in Kenneth Branagh Death on the Nile, and part of acclaimed tv series Small Axe created by Steve McQueen.

As for her future, the actress is hopeful about Shuri returning on a third Black Panther movie, as she told Buzzfeed:

“What I tried to say, maybe I didn’t do it clearly enough, to clarify, there is always the hope that you would have another film, especially in a franchise. If there is to be another film, which I hope there will be, I think there will be; it takes time to make it; you have to go through the script process.”
