Antony Starr Says The Boys Fans Are ‘Missing the Point’ When Idolizing Homelander

Villains have always been some of the most attractive characters on film and television, and Antony Starr‘s Homelander is no exception. In the world of superheroes in particular, the popularity achieved by the main enemies of the protagonists is somewhat surprising, with some even getting more fans than the main character.

When Joker was released in 2019, a huge debate began on social media about the motivations and actions carried out by Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck on screen. And the same thing happened with another important character that same year.

The Boys is a series that has generated controversy from the beginning, since it works as a dark and bloody satire of the superhero genre, showing am obscure and corrupted side of this type of characters, and Homelander is the greatest example of how a being with amazing abilities and a lot of power can do a lot of bad.

But despite the terrible things Homelander does on the show, being the main villain and the man to beat for the lead group, there are still plenty of fans who seem to idolize him, and it’s something the actor worries about. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Starr confessed that he thinks those who put Homelander on a pedestal are “missing the point”:

“There’s a very strange thing that’s happened with the character, though he is clearly not a good guy. A lot of people have glommed onto him. There’s a weird element out there that actually kind of idolize him. I’ve seen some s— on Twitter and I’m like, ‘Wait, What? You are missing the point entirely!’”

Homelander Will Be Even Harder to Overturn on The Boys Season 4

Beyond his powers that make him almost invincible, the real reason Homelander seemed unbeatable was his good image and great presence in Vought, but it was something he had completely lost during the third season.

However, at the end of the installment, Homelander once again has the approval of society as well as getting his son, Ryan, to finally be at his side, which makes him even more threatening due to Ryan’s powers.

In season four, the protagonists must find a way to destroy Homelander’s image again, or it will become increasingly difficult for them to bring him down.

Beyond having managed to clean up his image, Homelander will have to face a difficult moment in the fourth installment, since he will be brought to trial for his terrible crimes, something that was recently teased on a video published on Vaught’s social media, with a message from new CEO Ashley Barrett:

“It’s a dark day for America. But together, we can keep an innocent hero #HomeFree. Here’s CEO Ashley Barrett with more on Homelander.”

On the other hand, Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy doesn’t seem to be a part of the new episodes, even when he’s the only one powerful enough to defeat Homelander. However, Ackles has already confirmed that he will return in the future of the show, and in fact it will be part of the spinoff of the series, Gen V.
