Original Boy Meets World Topanga Actress Bonnie Morgan Lost the Role Because She “Wasn’t Pretty Enough”

As reported by PEOPLE, Bonnie Morgan, the actor who almost played Topanga Lawrence on Boy Meets World, recently stated that she lost the role because director David Trainer didn’t think she was “pretty enough.”

While chatting on the most recent episode of iHeart Radio’s Pod Meets World, Morgan told former Boy Meets World stars Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong, and Will Friedle that she was 12 years old at the time and that the role of Topanga seemed perfect for her.

Morgan said, “Even the name was out of my parents’ love history. It was the coolest thing ever.”

The actor, who also works as a contortionist, told the others that playing Topanga was “easy” for her and that she believed she’d gotten the role. Morgan then added that she “didn’t know” that there was a chance that she could be fired until it happened.

Still, The Ring Two star stated that when she arrived for the first day of filming, she could tell that something wasn’t quite right.

Bonnie Morgan Said Playing Topanga was “The Weirdest Day of My Life”

She said, “It was the weirdest day of my life. Even as a kid I was like, ‘What’s going on here?’ I came in and all the adults were very short with me.”

Morgan added that things seemed to be going well during the table read until the attention was focused on her. Allegedly, Ben Savage (who played Cory Matthews) was pushing her in a way that irritated Trainer. Morgan claimed that as a result, she became a “nervous wreck” while Savage kept attempting to make her laugh.

Morgan additionally stated that Trainer wasn’t a fan of the way she delivered some of her dialogue. At one point, her character was supposed to say “peace,” but the director told her to say “sweeter” instead.

The actor went on to say that Trainer got “really close” to her and told her to say the line “like you’re saying ‘Happy Birthday.'”

However, Morgan said that even after saying the line the way the director wanted, things continued to be uneasy, and by the end of the day, she was told to take her wardrobe home with her.

The Fear Clinic star said that at the time, she still believed that she had the job. Then the following day, her parents broke the news to her over the phone.

“They fired you,” Morgan recalled her father saying. Later, her agent informed her that Trainer didn’t think she couldn’t follow “direction.”

Morgan said, “The director said that I couldn’t take direction, which was one thing I’d never been accused of. My agent immediately fought back on that one. It came out very quickly to my agent that the director didn’t think I was pretty enough. Literally did not think I was pretty enough, so that meant that a grown man, a boss, could lie and tell me I was untalented because the fact was he didn’t think I was pretty.”

In response, the podcast hosts seemed startled by Morgan’s allegations.

Morgan additionally told Fishel, Strong, and Friedle that this was her first time publicly sharing her story and that there were reasons that she’d chosen to keep it a “dirty little industry” secret, mainly that she didn’t want to seem disrespectful to Fishel.

Boy Meets World first aired on ABC back in 1993 and wrapped up in 2000. Fishel later reprised her role as Topanga on Disney Channel’s spinoff Girl Meets World which was released in 2014 and had three seasons.
