A Black Lady Sketch Show Will Not Return for Season 5 at HBO

It’s the end of the road for A Black Lady Sketch Show. Created by Robin Thede, the sketch comedy series first premiered on HBO to tremendous acclaim back in 2019. The series has since went on for four seasons, wrapping up season 4 back in May. It has since been unclear if a fifth season was planned for 2024, but Variety has now reported that A Black Lady Sketch Show has concluded. There won’t be a fifth season, making the season 4 finale now serve as the series finale for the comedy show.

“For four exceptional seasons of A Black Lady Sketch Show we’ve been thrilled to partner with her on this groundbreaking, hilarious series,” an HBO representative says in a statement. “Robin, alongside Hoorae, Jax Media, and the incredible cast and crew, leave an indelible legacy not only in sketch, but in television comedy, and we look forward to continued creative collaboration under her deal with us.”

Thede went on to add, “Thank you to all the immensely talented cast members, guest stars, writers, directors, editors and crew members who have made A Black Lady Sketch Show an Emmy-winning success. I especially want to recognize the Black women and other women of color who excelled in every department at ABLSS. I am also eternally grateful for the support of Issa Rae and Jax Media, Amy Gravitt, Casey Bloys and the entire team at HBO, Max and Warner Bros. Discovery.”

Along with creating the series, Thede served as showrunner, writer, executive producer, and one of the stars. The series featured comedy sketches from the point of view of a Black woman, and along with Thede, other stars of the series who helped bring the comedy its acclaim include Quinta Brunson, Ashley Nicole Black, Laci Mosley, Gabrielle Dennis, Skye Townsend, DaMya Gurley, Tamara Jade, And Angel Laketa Moore.

Thede executive produced the show with Issa Rae, Dave Becky, Jonathan Barry, Tony Hernandez, and Brooke Posch. Guest stars have included Vanessa Williams, Angela Bassett, Laverne Cox, Gabrielle Union, Kelly Rowland, Wanda Sykes, Patti LaBelle, Nicole Byer, and more.

During its run, A Black Lady Sketch Show garnered widespread acclaim. Its first three seasons all sit with perfect 100% scores on the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes; there’s not enough reviews submitted to rank the fourth and final season. The show has also garnered a TCA Award, multiple Black Reel Awards, and it’s the first Black woman-led sketch show to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. In total, the first three seasons have earned 13 Emmy nominations along with three wins for editing and directing.

You can stream all four seasons of A Black Lady Sketch Show on Max. Meanwhile, there’s more to come for Max subscribers from Robin Thede. She is working on a new half-hour comedy series for Max with Warner Bros. Television that’s called Disengagement, so fans can look forward to that coming next.
