‘I’m Not the Tenth Doctor Now’

Summary

  • David Tennant is making a grand comeback to Doctor Who for its 60th anniversary.
  • Russell T. Davies assures viewers that the upcoming anniversary specials will address these questions and lay the foundation for the next phase.
  • Tennant’s decision to return was driven by nostalgia and the opportunity to enjoy something that meant so much to him before he gets too old to do it again.

Sci-fi television often thrives on unexpected twists, with dedicated fans continually theorizing and speculating. Doctor Who stands out in this regard, having held its audience spellbound for a span of six decades. As Doctor Who preps for its 60th anniversary, a familiar face is set to re-enter the iconic T.A.R.D.I.S., but not as we remember. David Tennant, renowned for his iconic role as the Doctor, is poised for a grand comeback. Yet, in a recent interview with Radio Times, the Scottish actor immediately refuted speculations of reprising his Tenth Doctor role. Instead, Tennant clarified…

“The Doctor’s been three different people in the meantime, so I’m not necessarily the same version of the Doctor that I was before. I’m not the Tenth Doctor now, I’m the Fourteenth. Well, strictly speaking we don’t know what the actual number is anymore, do we?”

The ambiguity surrounding the Doctor’s latest regeneration was a true curveball. Fans, having bid a heartfelt goodbye to Jodie Whittaker, were widely speculating that Ncuti Gatwa would take the helm. But the surprise twist of Tennant’s return certainly caught many off guard. Enter Russell T. Davies, the showrunner, who assures viewers that these anniversary specials will not only address these burning questions but also lay the foundation for the next phase of this time-traveling adventure.

But what drove Tennant, who once hung up his trench coat with a heavy heart, to rejoin the fold? It seems nostalgia played a part. Reflecting on his decision, Tennant shared:

“Initially, it was a casual conversation going, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to do a one-off?’ Then Russell [T Davies] was back running the show and suddenly it could be something bigger. But there’s really no pressure. It’s a victory lap, in a way — you get to enjoy something that had meant so much to you, one last shot before you get too old to do it again.”

Tennant also acknowledges the bittersweet sentimentality of returning, seeing it as a “victory lap” and perhaps, a last hurrah before age caught up with him. Yet, even with the allure of nostalgia, Tennant admits there were reservations. Would returning tarnish the beautiful memories he held from 15 years ago? Could he recapture the magic, or would it feel disjointed? As Tennant mused…

“It was like being handed a very lovely present. It was joyous, it was great fun. It was a very happy, joyous time 15 years ago. And returning to that could’ve been… well, who knows? It might’ve felt awkward, it might’ve felt difficult, I might not have been able to run as fast.”

With three 60th Anniversary specials on the horizon this November, Doctor Who is poised to once again mesmerize fans, old and new. And as whispers and anticipations build for season 14 in 2024, one thing is certain: the time-traveling escapades of the Doctor remain as unpredictable and thrilling as ever. As for Tennant, while his face might be familiar, his Fourteenth Doctor promises to take us on a journey unlike any we’ve seen before.
