Disney+ to Crackdown Anti-Password Sharing Sooner than Expected

Summary

  • Disney+ is cracking down on password sharing to increase the number of subscribers and prevent multiple households from sharing a single account.
  • Starting November 1, Canadian users will no longer be able to share their passwords, according to an official statement from Disney+.
  • Netflix’s success in banning password sharing has inspired other platforms, like Disney, to implement similar measures to boost subscriber numbers.

The House of Mouse will allow its fans to share its magic, but not the passwords. Disney+ officially announces measures against password sharing for its subscribers, and it will begin sooner than expected.

A few months ago, Disney announced that they would soon be taking extreme measures to increase the number of subscribers on their streaming platform since, like the vast majority of services of this type, they were stagnant and unable to grow as they used to. The strategy to increase the number of subscribers included limiting the use of the account to a single household, making it impossible to share passwords between several users who live in different places.

MobileSyrup reports that starting November 1, Disney+ users in Canada will no longer be able to share their passwords. Check out the official statement sent to Canadian subscribers via email:

“Unless otherwise permitted by your Service Tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household. Household means the collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside there. Additional usage rules may apply for certain Service Tiers. We may, in our sole discretion, analyze the use of your account to determine compliance with this Agreement. If we determine that you have violated this Agreement, we may limit or terminate access to the Service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this Agreement (including those set forth in Section 6 of this Agreement). You will be responsible for any use of your account by your household, including compliance with this section.”

Anti-Pasword Sharing Measures Worked for Netflix

Netflix

Although this type of measure can, ironically, cause a drop in the number of service subscribers, password sharing has long been the bane of many streaming platforms’ existence. Netflix has already shown that banning password sharing has worked for them, which will now likely open up the floodgates for others to follow suit.

Back in July, Netflix confirmed that their ban on account holders being able to share passwords has been a success, allowing them to increase the number of subscribers. As shared by Entertainment Weekly, after the presentation to investors for the second quarter of the year, Netflix reported an increase of 5.9 million subscribers, after the company had suffered a sharp decline last year. So it was to be expected that other platforms would take this as a sign to implement their own measures.

In fact, Disney also followed the path of Warner Bros. Discovery by eliminating original content from its catalog such as the Willow series or the movie Crater, which was removed just a few weeks after its release. Other measures taken by the House of Mouse is the reduction in the number of annual releases, especially within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, dedicating more time and work to each production individually after receiving a lot of criticism for the VFX on some of the studio’s latest series and movies.
