The end of Young Sheldon is a reason for many fans of The Big Bang Theory spin-off to be sad, but for the series’ creative team, there was never a better time for it to come to its conclusion.

Young Sheldon

Release Date September 25, 2017

Seasons 7

Studio Chuck Lorre Productions, Warner Bros. Television

Creator Chuck Lorre, Steven Molaro

Young Sheldon follows the early life of Sheldon Cooper, years before he becomes the man that fans grew to know and love in The Big Bang Theory. However, when working on a prequel show, there are some stories that have already been written, hinted at or told in their entirety. For executive producer Steve Holland, what we already know about Sheldon’s life as a teenager made it easy to end the show after Season 7. He told TribLive.com:

“There [are] certain things that we know happened in Sheldon’s life when he’s 14, as the character is this season, and we started talking about the future of the show and what it would look like. We know he goes off to Caltech at 14. It just felt like the right time to end the show and to end it strong while it was still on top.”

Series creator Chuck Lorre has a similar sentiment about the series. Although he has already been developing the next spin-off series, which will branch out from Young Sheldon to switch focus to Georgie and Mandy, for Young Sheldon, Lorre believes the end had to come now. He said:

“That’s a level of hubris that I think gets in the way of doing a good job. You do what feels right. You do what feels appropriate for the characters and the relationships, the tone of the show. You do stuff that touches yourself, and then you hope someone agrees with you.”

CBS

Like its predecessor, Young Sheldon has been delivering strong viewership and reviews throughout its seven season run. As one of the most successful shows on the network, it is hardly surprising that, although this show is coming to an end, another spin-off is just around the corner.

Following the conclusion of Young Sheldon, which is expected to feature several big cameo appearances in its finale, the focus will shift to Sheldon’s brother Georgie and his fiancée, Mandy. Montana Jordan and Emily Osment will be back to reprise their respective roles as the couple, but so far there have been very few details revealed about the series other than it being confirmed that the show will see the couple bringing up their new daughter, and facing the trials and tribulations that brings.

Related Young Sheldon Season 7 May Finally Explain the Big Change With Meemaw Meemaw’s endearing, carefree nature in Young Sheldon is starkly different from how she is portrayed in The Big Bang Theory. What changed?

Outside of this, there have also been rumors that Lorre is developing a further spin-off, which is thought to take place after the events of The Big Bang Theory, but as yet this has not been confirmed one way or the other.

Young Sheldon
is currently streaming new episodes on CBS. Seasons 1 – 6 can be found on Max and Netflix.
