Legacy Star Not Returning for Season 3, Leaving Potential Storyline Unresolved

Summary

  • Anthony Michael Hall will not return as FBI agent Will Barron in
    Bosch: Legacy
, leaving a gap in the story arc established in Season 2.
  • Despite the loss of Hall’s character, Season 3 will introduce new characters and plots, including Maggie Q as Renée Ballard.
  • The dynamic set up between Barron and Bosch will be missed in the new season, but the show remains popular and strong in its crime-solving narrative.

Bosch: Legacy will not feature Anthony Michael Hall as Special Agent Will Barron, despite him being a central character in Season 2. Barron came into the series as the leader of a task force investigating the death of Carl Rogers, and Harry Bosch’s involvement in it. Despite Season 2 leaving it open for Barron’s story to continue in Season 3, Hall has recently shared that he will not be returning to continue his character’s story arc.

Bosch: Legacy

Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch has retired from the LAPD and works as a private investigator. Defense attorney Honey “Money” Chandler has him work on some cases for her. His daughter, Maddie, navigates her first days as a patrol officer with the LAPD, working from Hollywood Station, where her father used to be assigned. Bosch investigates businessman Carl Rogers, who previously hired a hitman to kill Chandler.

Speaking with Moviefone about his new Netflix action movie Trigger Warning, Hall explained his exit from Bosch: Legacy after just one season, taking time to reflect positively on his time on the series and working with author Michael Connelly. Hall said:

“Well, apparently, I don’t think I’m going to be returning on Bosch: Legacy. It was interesting. It ended the season in a cliffhanger, so I thought there might be an opportunity, but it didn’t play out like that. But again, it was a pleasure to work with those guys. I love Michael Connelly. I mean, they gave me a great opportunity there. I was playing a lead FBI investigator going after him, as you recall.”

Anthony Michael Hall’s Bosch Departure Leaves a Gap in the Story

Hall’s absence from Season 3 leaves a significant gap in the continuation of Season 2’s story. Throughout Connelly’s Bosch novels, and two TV shows, the character of Harry Bosch has frequently found himself on the fringes of the law he upholds, occasionally stepping over the line to get to the truth of a case. Following the conviction of Kurt Dockweiler for kidnapping Bosch’s daughter, Maddie, Dockweiler’s prison overdose at the end of Season 2 left viewers with the distinct impression that Bosch could have been involved, and would have set up a showdown between the morally ambiguous former detective and Hall’s FBI agent.

Despite Hall’s exit from the show, Season 3 will obviously find some other way of putting pressure on Bosch to accept the consequences of his actions. However, fans shouldn’t be too disappointed at not seeing Hall return as Barron, as there will be several new characters and plots being introduced in the new season, including the introduction of Maggie Q as Renée Ballard – who will get her own spin-off series soon.

Related Why Bosch: Legacy Doesn’t Live Up to the Original Series

Bosch: Legacy just can’t match the magic of the original series, here’s why.

In short, the departure of Hall’s Barron from Season 3 is disappointing after the dynamic being set up between him and Bosch, but as an immensely popular series, Bosch: Legacy is not going to suffer too much for it. Across Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, Titus Welliver’s take on Connelly’s most famous creation has become one of the strongest crime shows currently on TV. With the new Ballard spin-off in production, and several of Connelly’s most recent books featuring a team-up of the two crime-solvers, surely their paths will cross again in at least one crossover series in the future.
