‘Mufasa’ Director Barry Jenkins Addresses Honoring James Earl Jones with Prequel

With Mufasa: The Lion King set to hit theaters soon, one actor’s legendary shadow looms particularly large over the production. James Earl Jones, who originally voiced Mufasa in the Oscar-winning 1994 original version of The Lion King and its 2019 remake, passed away earlier this year, making the release of the upcoming prequel with another actor portraying a young Mufasa feel particularly bittersweet.

Director Barry Jenkins took time to speak to Variety about the actor’s passing. Specifically, he revealed his thought process behind the placement of a touching tribute to the late actor at the very beginning of the new film and how much Jones’ work in the industry and the roles he played meant to those without father figures, who would find comfort in larger-than-life characters like Mufasa, as Jenkins would say:

“When I think about what James Earl Jones means, not even just to me, but to global audiences — people know this — I grew up without a father figure, and you go in, and you watch this art, you watch these films, sometimes these fathers in these movies become a stand-in for that. They become these father figures.”

‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Honors James Earl Jones Right From the Start

Given that Mufasa: The Lion King immediately begins with James Earl Jones’s voice and text that says “In Remembrance,” it feels like the entirety of the film is dedicated to the actor who first brought The Lion King to life all those years ago. According to Jenkins, that was the intention, as he would talk about the studio’s approval of the creative choice and his need to honor the late actor, since the film’s story centered almost entirely on the character first played by Jones:

“It felt like we had all lost a patriarch. We had all lost this man who meant so much. It felt like there was no way you could sit in this movie – go through an hour and 40 minutes — and not honor him in some way. You would be thinking about the ways in which you wanted to honor him, so it felt like we had to do it at the very front. The studio agreed right away, and we tried to find something that was very simple but also very clear and very powerful.”

Aaron Pierre voices Mufasa in the upcoming movie and will undoubtedly do his best to respect the actor who came before him while also making the role his own. While it’s sad that James Earl Jones is gone, his legacy lives on in the creative team who worked on the prequel film. Moreover, the film’s existence speaks to how Jones brought the character to life in a performance so emotionally compelling it warranted an expansion in the form of a feature film. The first reactions to the film have been mostly positive, which indicates that this film will hopefully serve as a touching tribute and legacy project that can introduce new fans to the world of The Lion King.

Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel to the live-action remake of the original Disney animated film, The Lion King. The film will follow Mufasa in his early days; further plot details are currently under wraps. The film will likely explore Mufasa and Scar’s relationship and how it became as strained as it did. In the film, Timon and Pumba will return, with Billy Eicher and Seth Rogen reprising their roles.
