As fans eagerly await Season 3, there’s so much to discover by rewatching Seasons 1 and 2 of ‘Squid Game.’

Picking up three years after the critically acclaimed pop-culture phenomenon that was Squid Game Season 1, Player 456, and winner of the games, abandons his plan to go to the United States and instead once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.

‘Squid Game’ Season 3 Scheduled To Hit Netflix on June 27, 2025

While not as well-received critically as the first offering, Squid Game Season 2 has been another huge hit for Netflix, racking up 68 million views in its premiere week and leaving previous record holder Wednesday’s 50.1 million views in the dust. Squid Game Season 2 saw Lee Byung-hun, Gong Yoo, and Wi Ha-jun return for more punishment, with new cast members including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-hoon and Yang Dong-geun as well as Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won and Won Ji-an. I Saw the Devil and The Magnificent Seven star Lee Byung-hun also returns as the mysterious Front Man, who has a scheme of his own.

The ending of Squid Game Season 2 proved to be divisive, with the second round culminating in a frustrating cliffhanger. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, however, has since revealed why he chose to end the season this way:

“I originally envisioned it as a single series, so both seasons two and three as a single series when I was writing it. But then, as I wrote the story along, it became to be too many episodes and too long of a story because you see Gi-hun’s journey where he returns to the game, but also he goes through a revolt, and that is actually the climax of that storyline, where he tries to create an uprising, but then that all goes to failure.”

And that failure came as a result of The Front Man, who spent Season 2 hiding in plain sight as a fellow player. According to Lee Jung-jae, Gi-hun will begin Season 3 unaware of the betrayal. “I don’t think he knows yet. I think he’s blaming himself for everything that happened,” he said.
