Underrated Horror Movie Is Streaming Free in June

The Lodge, the Christmas horror movie starring It’s Jaeden Martell

and Mad Max: Fury Road’s Riley Keough

, is getting a new streaming home this June. The horror outing is perfect for anyone looking for something beyond bleak in its approach, and follows Aidan and Mia, two siblings who have just lost their mother. Their father, Richard, has found love elsewhere, and he intends to make the children bond with their new stepmother, Grace. They retreat for the holidays to a remote cabin, but Richard receives a phone call that forces him to leave for work for a few days. Aidan, Mia, and Grace stay by themselves in the cabin, where something starts haunting them.

The 2019 psychological thriller is set to be added to Tubi‘s library on June 1, giving fans of the genre an opportunity to stream one of the best and most upsetting movies of the 2010s for free. They just have to stick around when the ads pop up. Which, considering the bleakness of The Lodge, could be a welcome reprieve. Per the film’s official plot synopsis:

A bone-chilling nightmare from the directors of Goodnight Mommy, The Lodge follows a family who retreat to their remote winter cabin over the holidays. When the father is forced to abruptly depart for work, he leaves his children, Aidan and Mia in the care of his new girlfriend, Grace. Isolated and alone, a blizzard traps them inside the lodge as terrifying events summon specters from Grace’s dark past.

20 Gritty Thrillers With the Bleakest Endings

We like to have fun and relax at the movies, right? But in the case of these gritty thrillers, you will probably have a hard time with their endings.

Despite a promising critical reception, The Lodge flew under the radar. It received a limited theatrical release, and when it expanded to more theaters worldwide, the hype had waned. Regardless, it is one of the most interesting movies in the realm of religious horror in recent years. Boasting a “Certified Fresh” label on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 75% score, it’s a must-see for a night of scary movies. Nevertheless, beware, as The Lodge is far from a traditional horror experience.

‘The Lodge’ Has One of the Most Devastating Endings in Modern Horror

Minor SPOILERS for The Lodge lie ahead…The Lodge directors, Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, are an Austrian duo specializing in horror filmmaking. After making a documentary about Peter Kern, they made the horror feature Goodnight Mommy in 2014. The film was very well-received, and it became the basis for a 2022 English language remake. Franz and Fiala directed a segment in the anthology The Field Guide to Evil, and one year later, they made The Lodge. More recently, they entered the spotlight again with the horror drama The Devil’s Bath, which was widely acclaimed and won the Best Feature Film award at the Sitges Film Festival.

While the movie spends most of the time within the boundaries of a “haunted house” story, the final act reveals a shocking plot twist that will make you gasp. We won’t spoil what happens, but we’ll tell you this: the ending of The Lodge is so deeply impactful that it will leave you feeling emotionally shattered. Enjoy!
