Zootopia is not a movie that is often talked about, but the arrival of its sequel in cinemas has proven that, just because a franchise is not full of nostalgia or constantly in the public consciousness, it can still blow away even the biggest IPs away – in this case, the biggest superhero movie of all time. Zootopia 2 has already claimed the seventh-highest opening in China, and after taking $100 million on its opening day, it has pushed aside Avengers: Endgame’s $79 million to be the only Hollywood movie to ever take $100 million in one day in the country.
Zootopia 2 has become one of the biggest movies of the year within just a few days over Thanksgiving weekend, passing almost every other movie released this year to land a place just inside the Top 10. If the film can end the weekend on more than The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ $521 million, then it will edge that movie out to number 11 and claim its Top 10 place in just several days. In the coming weeks, Zootopia is expected to continue to climb the chart and will no doubt surpass Lilo & Stitch’s $1.04 billion to become the highest grossing Hollywood movie of the year.
Disney’s year is not over yet, either. Avatar: Fire and Ash will arrive later in December and is expected to follow James Cameron’s previous entries in the franchise, potentially being another massive movie to end the year. While the third Avatar movie is tracking to open slightly lower than its predecessor, it is hard to see the film not being able to match Zootopia 2 and challenge it for the box office crown.
‘Zootopia 2’ Is Already One of the Highest Grossing Movies of the Year
With its massive opening weekend box office of $556 million worldwide – pushed on by an incredible $270 million from China – Zootopia 2 has easily passed some of the most highly praised films of the year. It has also beaten the entire box office of every Marvel Studios movie released this year, pushing The Fantastic Four: First Steps out of the Top 10 in the process.
Needless to say, the phenomenal performance of the movie will have pushed Zootopia 3 up the list of priorities for Disney, as well as reaffirming their belief that the future of the studio involved a lot of investment in IPs and sequels, which is already seeing Toy Story 5 being released next year, to be followed by Frozen 3, Coco 2, and several others.
