In fairness, there’s always something sort of vampiric about Haider Ackermann’s Tom Ford. And god bless him for it. Although this season saw Ackermann experimenting with super sexy swimwear and flashing more skin than he ever has in the past, the collection still maintained that quintessentially Ackermann emphasis on razor sharp tailoring and the richest possible fabrics.
And yet, there was a looseness to the Tom Ford silhouette this time around — a… well, one wouldn’t exactly call it ease, but a certain… casualness? An unshakeable unbotheredness that comes with knowing that if you can afford to buy these clothes and have the bravado to pull them off, you’re more or less untouchable.

There was an abundance of sex appeal too. But it was a cold sex appeal. Ice cold. Like a vampire. Dangerous and almost inhuman. Alluring, but also alienating. Not to harp on the vampire thing too much, but the clothes really were, as always, so perfect, so expensive, and the models so incredibly lean — with their sculpted cheekbones, smokey eyes, and slicked back hair — that they really did look like characters from an Anne Rice novel — out on the prowl, hunting for their next victim and trying to blend in, but also unable to resist the urge to stand out. They want to look human, but not too human.

Honestly, Ackermann should do costume design for a film. Or maybe a season of American Horror Story. He and Ryan Murphy could probably make something truly stylish (and unsettling) together. And have a lot of fun doing it.
In the meantime, however, Ackermann will just have to satisfy himself with dressing the super rich. Which, let’s be honest, are the closest thing we have to real life vampires anyway.
