Donald Glover’s New Project, Swarm: Cast, Plot, Photos

Donald Glover’s “Atlanta” may be done, but his next project is already in the works — and it looks just as compelling. Entitled “Swarm,” the series dives into stan culture, the internet, and the psychological complications that can come with them.

In a Jan. 30 interview with Vanity Fair, Glover, who is executive producing the project, provided some insight into the many inspirations behind the series. “We just thought it’d be fun to make a post-truth ‘Piano Teacher’ mixed with ‘The King of Comedy,'” he said, describing the show as a “sister” to “Atlanta.”

“Swarm,” which is part of Glover’s multi-year deal with Amazon, is a collaboration with “Watchmen”‘s Janine Nabers. It stars Dominique Fishback as the central character, a young girl whose love for a pop star — apparently based on Beyoncé — turns into a consuming obsession. A release date has not yet been announced, though it is rumored to be coming sometime in 2023.

Joining its team of creators is Malia Obama, who is working as a writer on the series. In a March 2022 interview with Variety, Glover described Obama as “somebody who’s gonna have really good things coming soon” before adding that her “writing style is great.” Glover’s brother and collaborator, Stephen, echoed the same sentiments, saying, “Donald always says perspective is important, and people with different perspectives are important for a writers’ room. And for sure, [Malia] definitely has a unique perspective on everything. So we wanted to hear her stories and have her work with us. Listening to her stories and having her involved really gave us a lot of good ideas.”
