Ryan Reynolds posted a tribute on Instagram this Saturday for Pierce Thiot, a creative director and producer at Maximum Effort who has died. Reynolds described Thiot as “a shining light of creativity, kindness and hard work” and said the loss felt nearly impossible to put into words.
No cause of death was shared.
Thiot spent close to five years at Maximum Effort, the production and marketing company Reynolds co-founded. He worked on campaigns for DoorDash, L’Oreal, and Mint. He also handled creative work for the Michael J. Fox Foundation. He was behind the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice campaign and, most recently, the Coyote vs. Acme project. He also co-wrote National Geographic’s Underdogs series. That show took home an Emmy.
Maximum Effort has become one of the most talked-about marketing shops in Hollywood. Reynolds and his team built a reputation for campaigns with actual humor. The best ones make people forget they’re watching an ad. Thiot was in the middle of that work for nearly half a decade.
Thiot’s resume was stacked before Maximum Effort. He’d worked on Apple, Nike, and Gatorade campaigns. Coca-Cola was on the list too. Those are not small accounts. He also created “Will It Beard?” – a viral video series. It turned beard styling into something genuinely funny and oddly compelling. That kind of creative instinct doesn’t show up everywhere.
Reynolds went beyond the credits in his tribute. He got personal. “He was generous with his time and love. He was funny as hell. He gave the best hugs,” Reynolds wrote.
That last line says a lot. Reynolds runs one of the sharpest creative operations in the entertainment business. He could have kept it professional and brief. He chose to write about hugs instead. That’s a personal choice. It means someone made that kind of impression on you as a whole person, not just as a coworker.
“We adored and admired Pierce,” Reynolds also wrote. “It is impossible to imagine the world, let alone our company, without him.”
Reynolds made a point to name Thiot’s longtime creative partner, Kathleen Swanson. Swanson and Thiot had worked together for over a decade. Their history went well back before Maximum Effort.
Thiot is survived by his wife Stacy, his children Adelaide and Jackson, and Swanson.
The tribute drew close to 63,000 likes on Instagram. For a post honoring someone behind the scenes rather than a household name, that number reflects real reach. Most people had probably experienced Thiot’s work at some point. They just didn’t know it was his.
The creative community is feeling this one. Thiot spent years helping build some of the most inventive work in entertainment marketing. Reynolds’ tribute makes it clear: Thiot was as remembered for who he was as for what he made.
