‘Under Siege’ (1992)
Release Date
October 9, 1992
Runtime
103 Minutes
Writers
J. F. Lawton
Terrorists make a terrible mistake in Under Siege. Posing as a rock band, they get themselves hired to perform at the birthday party of the commanding officer of the USS Missouri (BB-63). They plan to steal the vessel’s nuclear arsenal, unaware that the chef, Casey (Steven Seagal), is a decorated former Navy SEAL with a history of making bad guys scream to their mamas for help.
Wrong Ship To Target
Over 30 years since its release, Under Siege remains Seagal’s most critically acclaimed film. Watch out for the scene where he takes out miscreants in the kitchen, using all kinds of utensils as weapons. But the film doesn’t work because of him alone. He has able support from Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey, among others. The sounds that accentuate the tension are all expertly handled, too. No wonder the movie received two Oscar nominations for sound production.

‘Big Trouble in Little China’ (1986)
John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China sees truck driver Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) attempt to help his friend Wang Chi (Dun) rescue his green-eyed fiancée from criminals in San Francisco’s Chinatown. She has been targeted by an ancient sorcerer who believes a woman with green pupils will help him erase a centuries-old curse.
Fighting Voodoo
Carpenter, better known for his horror work, crafts a loving ode to friendship. Avoiding didacticism or any form of heavy-handed themes, his light touch allows the action to play out in a manner that appeals to casual audiences. The on-screen rapport is also beautiful to see, and it must have been influenced by the fact that Russell was comfortable around Carpenter, having worked with him before. Beyond that, multiple catchy tunes pepper the soundtrack. By turns saccharine and tangy, Big Trouble in Little China is definitely worth your time.

‘Taken’ (2008)
Release Date
January 30, 2009
Runtime
90 minutes
Taken finds former Green Beret and retired CIA officer Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) attempting to create a bond with his 17-year-old daughter, who lives with her mother and her wealthy stepfather. When she heads to Europe for a pop concert headlined by her favorite band, she gets kidnapped, forcing Mills to go badass.
Neeson’s Metamorphosis into an Action Star
“I will look for you, I will find you… And I will kill you.” Has there ever been a more badass action movie quote? Taken is so good that it convinced Liam Neeson to drop his desire for drama roles. No more Schindler’s List. Just beating people up. Has the metamorphosis worked out well for him? Avoid saying a word, or he will look for you… find you… and…

‘Fearless’ (2006)
Release Date
January 26, 2006
Runtime
103 minutes
Director
Ronny Yu
Writers
Chi-long To, Chris Chow
Fearless concerns the fate of Huo Yuanjia (Li), a legendary Chinese martial artist who retreats to a rural village to learn humility and embrace nature after a personal tragedy. A new challenge arises when it is time for him to head back to the city.
Li At His Usual Best
Director Ronny Yu (known in America for Freddy vs. Jason) juggles the differing tones and plots perfectly, while avoiding any form of maudlin schmaltz. The storyline remains lean and direct. About Li, he is effortlessly fierce here, and, at times, debonair. The film won Best Action Choreography at the Hong Kong Film Awards, and that’s saying something, considering that hundreds of well-choreographed films get made each year in Hong Kong.

‘White House Down’ (2013)
Denied the opportunity of becoming a Secret Service agent, Capitol police officer John Cale (Channing Tatum) vows not to disappoint his daughter with the bad news. He takes her on a tour of the White House, but as they are there, terrorists storm the building. Will Cale step up and keep both his daughter and President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx) alive until the end of White House Down?
Saving POTUS
In the early 2010s, Hollywood was obsessed with scenarios where the life of the POTUS is in danger. Still, White House Down remains preferred in this category of films, with Olympus Has Fallen also being singled out as a great alternative. The action is this particular film’s greatest asset, but it also works because it has two unbelievably talented actors in the lead. Wait for the iconic chase scene on the White House lawn. Greatest movie car chase scene?

‘Run All Night’ (2015)
In Run All Night, Jimmy Conlon (Liam Neeson) is now retired after years of eking out a living as a mob hitman. His peaceful existence is soon interfered with when his estranged son witnesses a Don’s son committing murder. Eager to protect his own blood, Jimmy kills the killer, an action that triggers a manhunt.
Man Vs. The Mob
Tense, compelling, and filled with nighttime visual wonders, Run All Night also excels by adequately covering the themes of parental responsibility and moral retribution. The third collaboration between Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra (after Non-Stop and Unknown) is also flavored with a pungent dose of noir-ish dialogue, making the saga more gripping. Great support from Common, Joel Kinnaman, and Ed Harris adds extra value to the film.
4
‘Raw Deal’ (1986)
Release Date
June 6, 1986
Runtime
106 minutes
Director
John Irvin
Writers
Gary DeVore
Producers
Dino De Laurentiis
-
Mark Kaminski / Joseph P. Brenner
-
Sam Wanamaker
Luigi Patrovita
In Raw Deal, the FBI struggles to prosecute a mob boss because there is a mole within the law enforcement agency. A change of strategy is thus required, so Mark Kaminsky (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a disgraced former agent desperate for reinstatement, is brought in and tasked with going undercover.
‘80s Action Magic
Raw Deal isn’t exactly one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s best movies, but the actor is not at fault. He is brilliant in every movie he’s in, and always has a strong screen presence. The main issue is the script. Weak in some areas, it will fail to impress cinephiles who value quality. However, it isn’t totally a raw deal. Those in it purely for the action will have a blast.

‘Shooter’ (2007)
Release Date
March 22, 2007
Runtime
124 Minutes
Force Recon Scout Snipers Gunnery Sergeant Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg) is abandoned by his superiors after a mission goes wrong in Ethiopia. After years of living under the radar, government officials convince him to help prevent an assassination plot against POTUS, only for him to get accused of the killing when it finally happens. Will the real culprits be revealed in Shooter?
Typical Action, Sprinkled with a Little Conspiracy
Antoine Fuqua never struggles when handling such kinds of stories. Here, elements of politics and the military-industrial complex co-mingle with personal challenges, resulting in a movie that feels both relatable and alien in concept. Wahlberg stretches his screen persona effortlessly as the archetypal badass with little humor and no sweet spot. So entertaining is the film that it was later turned into a miniseries.

‘Red 2’ (2013)
Release Date
August 2, 2013
Runtime
116minutes
Writers
Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber
In Red 2, former CIA black-ops agent Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) is trying to live a normal life. Unfortunately, he is forced to spring back into action when a dangerous Cold War-era weapon known as the Nightshade resurfaces. Reuniting with his team, he vows to make things right.
As Good as the First
Red 2 was one of Bruce Willis’ final blockbusters before he resigned himself to the B-movie space, and it’s so good that one can’t help but wonder why he jumped out of Hollywood’s big-budget machine. The film has some of the best cinematography of all his movies and some memorable banter. The action flick would also be nothing without the contributions of John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, and Brian Cox.

‘Under Siege 2: Dark Territory’ (1995)
Release Date
July 13, 1995
Runtime
99
Director
Geoff Murphy
After the success of Under Siege, making a sequel was always a no-brainer. In Under Siege 2, the action plays out on a train traveling through the Rocky Mountains from Denver to Los Angeles. Casey Ryback (Seagal) is traveling to his brother’s funeral when terrorists strike again. And you can trust him to deal with them the same way he did before.
Under Siege Again
Dark Territory isn’t as flawless as the first film, but its plot still keeps you hostage. And it’s all thanks to a wonderful script by Matt Reeves (he wrote it while in college). The great performances we saw the first time around are lacking. Even Seagal switches to the “wooden” mode he has often been criticized for. Even so, the endless action masks all blemishes. You’ll be left with a smile when it all ends.
