Read Our ReviewFrom Director Christopher Landon (Freaky, Happy Death Day) comes yet another satisfying thriller that cleverly mixes the familiar genre with modern technology and fear. Drop follows widowed mother Violet (Meghann Fahy), who finally decides to go on her first date in years. After exchanging DMs with charming photographer Henry (Brandon Sklenar), the pair agrees to meet at an upscale restaurant. While the evening begins with normal first-encounter nerves and pleasant conversation, it all soon turns into a nightmare. Violet receives threatening AirDrops from an unknown sender who tells her she must kill Henry or else her son and sister will die. Violett Beane, Jacob Robinson, Reed Diamond, and Gabrielle Ryan also star in this psychological nail-biter of the worst first date imaginable.
An Absurdly Fun Ride for Anyone on a Second Date
Screenwriters Jillian Jacobs and Christopher Roach (Fantasy Island, Truth or Dare) don’t hold anything back in this suspenseful exploration of technology’s dangers, our society’s increasing surveillance, and the psychological effects of trauma. The film impressively balances silliness with the very real fears of dating as a woman in the current world, taking its premise seriously while also exaggerating plotlines for a deliciously fun moviegoing experience. Additionally, it includes a strong leading heroine in Fahy, who skillfully portrays the common dread and reality of going on a date with the wrong man, grounding this romping upgrade to the classic domestic thriller.

Read Our ReviewSacramento perfectly blends buddy-comedy antics with a tender coming-of-age story for adults in multi-hyphenate Michael Angarano’s latest feature. Angarano stars as childish and free-spirited Rickey alongside old friend and soon-to-be father, Glenn (Michael Cera), who heads out on an impromptu road trip to Sacramento. The two men have grown apart over the years, their strained friendship becoming the focus of this funny film about reconnecting with the past, confronting the present, and growing up enough to look forward to the future. Kristin Stewart and Maya Erskine also co-star.
A Short and Sweet Buddy Comedy
A buddy comedy is only as good as the main duo’s dynamic. Luckily, Sacramento’s leading men, Angarano and Cera, deftly revive the dying genre. Their heartwarming, witty, and subtly awkward interplay parallels what it’s really like dealing with a fading friendship (and trying to pretend everything is okay to avoid dealing with it at the same time). Despite its brief 89-minute runtime, the actors easily play with the hilarity of getting older and its heavier underlying themes of grief, mental health, and the importance of friendship (especially in adulthood). Stewart also shines in a supporting role as Glenn’s pregnant wife Rosie, offering another layer of depth to the pair’s maturing lives. While her adult-in-the-room persona deserves more screen time, the overall story is well-crafted with memorable twists, laugh-out-loud scenes, Cera’s famous off-beat charm, and polished camerawork, making Sacramento a small film moviegoers don’t want to miss.

Read Our ReviewWarfare is a masterful dramatization of a real U.S. military mission gone horribly wrong. The film is based on former Navy SEAL and JTAC (Joint Terminal Attack Controller) Ray Mendoza’s true story of a gruesome battle that nearly cost him his life during a 2008 operation in Ramadi, Iraq. The film follows his platoon of Navy SEALs who were instructed to find an enemy target in the dead of night. Their destination, an unassuming brick house with a sleeping family, soon becomes a doomed safe haven between the soldiers and surrounding insurgents. With the help of British filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War), Mendoza ignores past genre entries and their glorifying focus on death-defying heroism against evil, bringing audiences a true-to-life account of the horror and savagery of combat. The main cast includes D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Charles Melton, Kit Connor, Joseph Quinn, Michael Gandolfini, and Noah Centineo.
An Anti-War War Movie
Mendoza’s Warfare is a visceral film that makes audiences understand the horror of combat. While many war films seem to promote the military industrial complex and its recruitment with valor-inspired marketing, this movie does the opposite. Its unrelenting production design, graphic imagery, and sound editing demonstrate how the body violently reacts in an active warzone. When a bomb goes off nearby, a person can go deaf, and the concussion wave causes internal damage. When a comrade is bleeding out, how does someone stay calm enough to save them and escape approaching enemies? Mendoza and Garland expertly illustrate the fog of war, its unsparing nature, and its pointless loss and suffering. Overall, Warfare takes the age-old storytelling advice show-don’t-tell with impressive execution — powerfully revealing war as hell on earth in every frame.

Read Our ReviewSome moviegoers may have shrugged off Jarod Hess’s (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) absurd video-game adaptation as a nonsensical mess. However, A Minecraft Movie has proven to be a box-office success, with fans pressing down on the left control stick toward theaters in droves. When a mysterious portal leads four characters into the block-built Overworld, where they can create anything, they begin an imaginative journey to return home. With the help of a crafter named Steve (Jack Black), they build their own dreamland from cubes while surviving the world’s nightly mobs of creatures trying to kill them. Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge round out the movie’s fun-filled cast.
Pure Entertainment for Kids and Gamers
A Minecraft Movie initially stirred up controversy when its trailer was released, with many die-hard gamers and cinephiles alike up in arms about its live-action premise. Despite reservations, everyone still showed up at the theater and now can’t get enough of its fun-for-fun’s-sake tone and inside jokes for those familiar with the popular game. Additionally, for parents taking their kids to see it, there are plenty of one-liners and innuendos that appeal to adults, like a lot of other films intended for younger audiences. So, while it may not be an Oscar contender, A Minecraft Movie offers a worthwhile and entertaining blockbuster that isn’t afraid of its own absurdity with a hilarious cast to deliver it all.

Read Our ReviewFollowing Roshan Sethi’s first feature film, 7 Days, the director gives rom-com fans another heartwarming American-Indian romance to fall for with A Nice Indian Boy. The plot follows reserved doctor Naveen, played by Karan Soni (Miracle Workers, Deadpool), who repeatedly meet-cutes American photographer Jay (Jonathan Groff, Hamilton, Glee). In a surprising twist, Naveen discovers that Jay was actually orphaned and raised by Indian parents. Despite their initial resistance, the two bond over their similar upbringings and can’t help but fall in love, forcing Naveen’s personal life and family life together for the first time. Based on the beautiful play by Madhuri Shekar, the film also stars Sunita Mani, Zarna Garg, Harish Patel, Peter S. Jim, and Sas Goldberg.
A Universal Love Story
While the formulaic genre is full of tired tropes, A Nice Indian Boy delivers a uniquely sincere LGBTQ+ love story that never seems forced. Considering Director Sethi pulled from his own struggles coming out against his Hindu family traditions while making the film (as well as his real-life queer relationship with Soni), his experiences and humorous perspective shaped a truly special and authentic adaptation. Additionally, Soni and Groff (as well as the supporting cast) give compelling performances that focus on the universal struggle to find love regardless of identity. Thus, the film is a perfect watch for anyone looking for their next rom-com favorite.

Read Our ReviewA24 is known for producing original, high-quality genre-benders, and its latest horror comedy, Death of a Unicorn, is no exception. Alums of the sub-genre Paul Rudd (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) and Jenna Ortega (Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice) co-star as a father-daughter duo who accidentally hit a unicorn en route to a weekend business retreat with Rudd’s billionaire boss, played by Richard E. Grant (Saltburn). Soon after their arrival, the unicorn’s extraordinary healing powers are revealed, harvested, and sold to the highest bidder. However, the family’s unquenchable greed, personified by two man-killing unicorns in search of their lost child, seals their bloody fate. The main cast also features Téa Leoni, Will Poulter, Sunita Mani, and Anthony Carrigan.
A Fresh Blend of Gore, Laughs, and Social Critique
Alex Scharfman makes his directorial debut with this romping commentary on classism and its inherent immorality. Death of a Unicorn plays on its absurd, though criminally uncharted, unicorn premise that’s sure to satisfy viewers (as long as they aren’t part of the one percent). The film delivers a timely satire of modern capitalistic greed and its final death rattle in the current era before giving the common people what they want most: the violent deaths of its rich villains. In contrast, the horror comedy uses Ortega’s pure-hearted Ridley to exemplify the magic of a virtuous life (and afterlife). In between it all, there are endless moments of brevity and stand-out performances that definitely make Death of a Unicorn a movie worth a trip to the theater.

Read Our ReviewIt seems that 2025 is shaping up to be a great year in cinema for animal lovers. From kid flicks like Dog Man and Paddington in Peru to the poignant dramedy The Penguin Lessons, there are plenty of new movies that entertain through personified creatures and touching human/animal bonds. Well, it doesn’t end there because The Friend gives us another important look at the transformative relationship between us and our canine companions. The film stars Oscar-nominated actress, Naomi Watts, as a writer living in New York City named Iris. When she suddenly loses her best friend and mentor, Walter (Bill Murray), she not only has to deal with grief, but also care for his Great Dane, Apollo, whom he left behind. The typical new-pet antics ensue, ultimately challenging Iris to face her past and inner life. Constance Wu, Carla Gugino, Sarah Pidgeon, and Ann Dowd also star.
A Charming Dramedy
Directing duo Scott McGehee and David Siegel bring this dramedy of grief to life through an unexpected human-dog friendship. While the genre has several entries that use a pooch to help its protagonist make realizations and changes in their life, The Friend will steal viewers’ hearts through its uniquely adorable (and huge) pup as well as its impressive cast. Additionally, this allegorical narrative makes for a touching tale that explores the question for anyone with pets who’s experienced loss and its subsequent fears: what happens to them when I’m gone?

Read Our ReviewWhile there are plenty of movies that mine the special bonds between humans and animals for cinematic fodder, The Penguin Lessons enters new territory through its exotic star and setting. Directed by Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty), this heart-warming dramedy follows Tom Michell (portrayed by Oscar-nominee Steve Coogan) through personal and political unrest while teaching English at a private boys’ school in 1970s Argentina. After saving a penguin caught in an oil spill, Tom begrudgingly adopts the adorable companion. Soon, the two beings form a hilarious and touching friendship as the animal, named Juan Salvador, uplifts Tom and his students as they endure a dark and unstable time period under a military dictatorship.
A Surprisingly True Story (and a Real Bird)
Despite the over-saturation of the human-animal friendship tale, The Penguin Lessons is one of the few actually based on a true story covered in Tom Michell’s 2015 memoir. While some moviegoers may overlook this genre entry, they’ll miss out on its realistic duality of life’s lightness and humor against a harrowing backdrop of geopolitical history. Additionally, by balancing the tone with the help of Coogan’s sharp delivery of classically dry British humor, it easily explores the importance of connection, personal growth, and the power of individual action to create better lives for all. And if that hasn’t sold anyone, there are tons of cute penguin shots (no CGI anywhere) that make it a worthy watch by itself.

Read Our ReviewBased on the inspiring true story of writer/director Tracie Laymon, Bob Trevino Likes It pulls off a perfectly sentimental and uplifting tale of unlikely friendship. The award-winning dramedy focuses on caretaker Lily Trevino (Barbie Ferreira) and her estranged relationship with her father Bob (French Stewart). Previously abandoned by her mother during her childhood and longing for a lasting familial bond, Lily seeks to get back in contact with Bob online. However, after unexpectedly encountering a stranger who shares her father’s name (played by John Leguizamo), the two soon develop a close friendship. Through mutual kindness and connection, both adults begin healing from their pasts and learning their individual worth. The supporting cast also features Lauren ‘Lolo’ Spencer and Rachel Bay Jones.
An Emotional Indie Dramedy
Ferreira and Leguizamo give undeniably superb performances as Bob Trevino Likes It’s leading kind-of-father-daughter duo. Their vulnerability and grounded dynamic establish a genuine friendship that makes the story a moving look at finding meaning and connection in unconventional places. Additionally, there are plenty of lively scenes (like the cathartic rage room trip) that prevent the movie from veering too far into sappiness, balancing poignancy with fun. Overall, this small film is sure to have a big impact on audiences through its believable cast and transformative message that seemingly minor acts of kindness can change your life.

Read Our ReviewLiving without pain may seem like a dream come true. However, the filmmakers behind Novocaine, Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, reveal its gruesome reality through the film’s punching-bag hero. Nathan Caine (Jack Quaid) lives a seemingly dull life as an assistant manager at a bank. The most exciting thing he’s got going on involves his co-worker crush Sherry (Amber Midthunder) reciprocating his romantic interest. Unfortunately, their budding relationship is short-lived. When three robbers enter the bank and, ultimately, kidnap Sherry, Nathan goes after them. So, what’s the twist? Nathan has a medical condition that prevents him from feeling pain. Thus, he embarks on a brutal quest to save the girl of his dreams while the thugs unleash unfettered violence to stop him. Jacob Batalon, Ray Nicholson, Betty Gabriel, and Matt Walsh also star.
A Gnarly Action Comedy
Even though Novocaine’s big twists can be seen coming a mile away, it doesn’t hinder its fresh premise and wild action sequences. Seeing a regular guy become an unstoppable force, not because of his strength, but his resolve despite brutal injury, makes for an entertaining and crazy ride where anything goes. As a result, the film uniquely shines light on the incredible work of its make-up, practical effects, and stunt crews’ ability to not only make every punch seem realistic, but carry continuity throughout Nathan’s building list of wounds. Plus, with Quaid’s versatility on-screen, audiences get to enjoy not only a fun-filled grotesquerie, but a leading man that easily blends comedy, drama, and intense fighting choreography.

Black Bag
March 14
Read Our ReviewFollowing director Steven Soderbergh’s collaboration with screenwriter David Koepp on the recent psychological thriller Presence, the filmmaking duo has already returned with the sophisticated spy mystery Black Bag. When British intelligence agent George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender) discovers his wife Kathryn (Cate Blanchett) is one of five suspects who could have stolen a top-secret government program, he may have to choose between his loyalty to her and his country. This film takes audiences on a gripping journey full of twists and turns to figure out the hidden identity of its antagonist. The ensemble cast also includes Gustaf Skarsgård, Marisa Abela, Pierce Brosnan, Naomie Harris, Tom Burke, Regé Jean Page, and Kae Alexander.
A Riveting Whodunit
The spy genre certainly has its clichés, but Black Bag adeptly avoids them through a realistic narrative. Fans of crazy action scenes, unlimited gadgets, exotic lairs, or a mesmerizing femme fatale will have to look elsewhere. Instead, this film offers a crisp story of murder and betrayal through its phenomenal writing, dialogue, unraveling secrets, and covert tactics from a group of savvy espionage agents. Additionally, Fassbender and Blanchett’s skillful ability to play into the intimate nature of marriage while also compartmentalizing their work as separate operatives makes for a juicy mystery that’ll keep viewers guessing until the very end. And the final reveal is definitely worth every second.

Read Our ReviewFans of Oscar-winning auteur Bong Joon-ho’s brilliant commentary on classism in Parasite can now see his latest sci-fi comedy, Mickey 17. The film is set in a futuristic reality where expendable employee Mickey (Robert Pattinson) is repeatedly killed and “reprinted” in service of failed politician/self-proclaimed deity Kenneth Marshall’s (Mark Ruffalo) expedition to colonize space. A biting critique of lower-class exploitation, this mixed-genre epic sees Mickey, now on his 17th iteration, grapple with identity, autonomy, and what it means to be human in a world that overcomes the finality of death and swiftly uses it for the private enterprise of the ultra-powerful. Mickey 17 also stars Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun.
A Wild Satire of Mortality and Class Warfare
Director Bong Joon-ho has clear talent when it comes to crafting unique narratives that balance bigger questions about the human condition while also staying relevant to the ever-present conflict between social classes. For Mikey 17, the filmmaker skillfully frames the story around a textbook proletariat worker and the parodied narcissist in charge (along with his unsubtle gaggle of red-hat-wearing lackeys). Focusing on Mickey being used as a re-printable resource instead of a person for the benefit of the wealthy elite highlights the former’s value against the latter’s parasitic uselessness. Without Mickey, and all of us metaphorically like him, the expedition would have failed — A Bug’s Life message that reminds the little people of their true power. Pattinson also shines in this difficult role, overall anchoring the extravagant cinematic experience.

Director Osgood Perkins (Longlegs) has taken a crack at the many works of Stephen King by adapting one of his most peculiar short stories. The Monkey follows twin brothers Hal and Bill Shelburn (Theo James) as they discover the titular strange toy in their father’s attic. Unfortunately, shortly after its discovery, a series of disastrous deaths rock their world, leading them to ultimately drift apart into their adulthood. But when the disconnected deaths start to occur once more, the two brothers must band together in order to destroy the monkey for good. Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, and Sarah Levy round out the main cast.
A Long Time Coming
Even though acclaimed director Frank Darabont originally intended to adapt The Monkey for the big screen, there’s still plenty to enjoy with Osgood Perkins’ take on the titular toy. The injection of morbid comedic elements feels appropriate for the story being told here, and Elijah Woods’ return to horror after his roles in 2012’s Maniac and 2019’s Come to Daddy is a genuinely refreshing sight. This is, of course, in addition to Stephen King’s praise for the adaptation, describing it as being “batsh*t insane.” If you want to check out Osgood Perkins’ most impressive horror outing yet, you really should.

The adorable bear Paddington is back for his third adventure on the big screen, this time heading into the lush lands of South America. Paddington in Peru, as the name suggests, sees Paddington heading to Peru per a request from his Aunt Lucy. However, as he brings the Brown family along on his journey, Paddington finds himself investigating a sprawling mystery surrounding Aunt Lucy’s whereabouts. Ben Whishaw reprises his role as Paddington, with Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, and Jim Broadbent co-starring.
A Wholesome Animated Film
Despite the absence of director Paul King and Sally Hawkins, Paddington in Peru still manages to capture what makes this delightful series of animated films so heartfelt. Beyond just looking fantastic, the warm vocal performance by Ben Whishaw and the overall sense of whimsy found throughout the film’s screenplay carries its lighthearted plot beats to a comforting finish. Despite prominently working with music videos and commercials, director Dougal Wilson really managed to nail down what makes the Paddington series so wonderful in his feature-length debut.

One of Them Days is a refreshing buddy comedy from the minds of director Lawrence Lamont and writer Syreeta Singleton. Dreux Jones (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) are friendly roommates who, unfortunately, are in for one of those eponymous days. After discovering that their rent money for the month has been spent without their knowledge, the two are forced into an impromptu race against time to not only avoid a potential eviction, but to maintain their lasting friendship as well. Katt Williams co-stars as Lucky.
A Fun Buddy Comedy
Featuring SZA’s acting debut, One of Them Days is a simple, if not entertaining film that contrasts wonderfully against some of the darker films released alongside it. Syreeta Singleton manages to bring her sense of humor to the big screen following her work on shows like Central Park, Insecure, and Rap Sh!t, while simultaneously marking the first R-rated female Black comedy since 2017’s Girl Trip. The chemistry between SZA and Keke Palmer is enjoyable, the supporting cast helps carry the film to its upbeat ending, and its score by Chanda Dancy helps make the story surrounding it a wonderful treat for the senses.
