Adam Driver Takes First TV Role in 8 Years in Netflix Hostage Thriller

Adam Driver is making his grand return to television. The Marriage Story star, 41, shot to fame for his memorable role as hot-headed part-time carpenter, part-time actor Adam Sackler in HBO’s Girls. He played Hannah’s (Lena Dunham) on-again, off-again love interest in the popular dramedy for six seasons, from 2012 to 2017. Midway through the show, his career exploded to an all-new level when he made his debut as Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015 — and the movie offers snowballed from there.

Despite his major success on the small screen, Driver hasn’t taken on a new acting gig on television since he voiced Art the Artist in “The Bleakening: Part 1” episode of Bob’s Burgers the same year that Girls ended — until now, that is. On Wednesday, Oct. 29, Netflix announced that Driver is set to lead an upcoming crime thriller series, Rabbit, Rabbit, created by The Batman co-writer Peter Craig. He will play the role of a man on the run who finds himself in the middle of a tense and dangerous situation with the FBI.

When an escaped convict (Driver) is cornered by law enforcement at a truck stop, he takes hostages in an effort to bargain for his freedom. But the standoff soon escalates into an unmanageable social experiment with his captives, as well as an emotional poker match with a veteran FBI Crisis Negotiator trained in “tactical empathy.”

According to the press release, Driver will also serve as an executive producer on the show, alongside Philip Barantini (Adolescence), Samantha Beddoe (Boiling Point) through It’s All Made Up Productions, and Bryan Unkeless (I, Tonya) through Night Owl.

Netflix has yet to confirm a release date for the show.

It’s recently come to light that Disney slammed the brakes on a Star Wars script penned by critically acclaimed director and screenwriter Steven Soderbergh. According to a report, a project titled The Hunt for Ben Solo was already fully written and “ready to shoot” when Kathleen Kennedy pitched it to Disney. Driver himself called it “one of the coolest (expletive) scripts” he had “ever been a part of” and described the story as “handmade and character-driven” in an interview with the Associated Press. However, Disney made the surprising decision not to move forward with the project, leaving hardcore Kylo Ren fans longing for what could have been.

Earlier this month, Soderbergh took to social media to speak out for the first time about the unexpected and disappointing situation.

“For the record, I did not enjoy lying about the existence of ‘THE HUNT FOR BEN SOLO,’” he said in a post shared to Bluesky, “but it really did need to remain a secret…until now!”

“Also, in the aftermath of the ‘HFBS’ situation, I asked Kathy Kennedy if LFL had ever turned in a finished movie script for greenlight to Disney and had it rejected. She said no, this was a first.”
