Up until now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Ant-Man movies have been mostly known for bringing a bit of a reprieve to the MCU’s more series stories, but that seems all about to change with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ushering in Phase 5 of the franchise. Now director Payton Reed has followed up details revealed at San Diego Comic-Con about the upcoming third outing for Paul Rudd’s size-changing hero, and says that Rudd’s Scott Lang will change the MCU forever in the movie.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania catches up with Rudd’s Lang and Evangeline Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne aka the Wasp for the first time since the events of Avengers Endgame. While the first trailer was shown at Comic-Con, featuring first looks at Kathryn Newton as the new Cassie Lang, and Jonathon Majors’ return as the first full blow iteration of Kang the Conqueror, there has so far been no public release of this footage, which is mostly expected considering the film isn’t due for release until February 2023. For the same reason, Reed would not discuss specific details when talking to Access at SDCC, but did comment that the movie will cause irreversible changes to the MCU. He said:

“Kicking off Phase 5 is really exciting for us, because, we’re the Ant-Man movies. It’s our third movie. It’s this trilogy now. But things happen in this movie that are going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe permanently. And it’s fun for us that Scott Lang is at the center of that change.”

From his relatively quiet introduction at the end of Phase 2, Scott Lang became one of the most important members of the Avengers team in Avengers: Endgame, when he came up with the theory of using the Quantum Realm to complete the time heist that allowed the Avengers to ultimately beat Thanos. Now the latest Ant-Man movie is set to bring the hero up against the Multiverse Saga’s big bad Kang, as well as MODOK, and potentially some other multiverse surprises.
At the moment, it is unclear how all of the elements of the movie are going to fit together, but it certainly seems that whatever goes down between Kang, Ant-Man and the Wasp is going to kick-start some serious ramifications across the entire Marvel multiverse. Of course with a long way to go until the Multiverse Saga reaches its conclusion, this is not likely to be the only version of Kang that is seen.
Along with Majors, Rudd and Lilly, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will see the return of Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer as Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, respectively, and there have also been rumors that Corey Stoll will also be back after last been seen as Darren Cross/Yellowjacket in Ant-Man when he was assumed to have died after being shrunk down into the Quantum Realm. With Bill Murray also part of the cast as a villain, it seems that Scott, Hope and the team will have their hands full when the movie hits cinemas in February 2023.
