A new trailer for Netflix’s 2024 slate has revealed a new look at the long-awaited Beverly Hills Cop sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. The latest footage from the action flick not only offers a new look at Eddie Murphy back in his Adidas Country sneakers and varsity jacket as Axel Foley once again heads off to Beverly Hills to cause trouble, but also reveals that the sequel will debut on July 3. As well as a new look at Murphy’s triumphant return, the footage also reveals a new look at Paul Reiser, who will reprise the role of Detective Jeffrey Friedman, Axel’s partner in the Detroit Police Department. You can check out some screenshots from the new footage below.

With the return of favorites like Squid Game, Bridgerton, The Diplomat, Umbrella Academy, Rebel Moon and Beverly Hills Cop, and brand-new shows and movies like 3 Body Problem, Avatar, Back in Action, and Atlas, Netflix continues to offer some of the biggest shows, movies and events into 2024.

The last audiences saw of Axel Foley was in 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop III, and Murphy has recently explained why a fourth outing took so long.

“Jerry Bruckheimer, the original producer. When he got involved, and he started developing the script, and he knew what Beverly Hills Cop was supposed to be… that’s when it all started to come together. Because we tried for years and years, maybe 10, 12 years, and I must have read five or six different scripts, and it was never right. The studio was like, ‘Let’s go. Here it is.’ It was like, ‘It’s just not it.’ Jerry Bruckheimer got back in there, and he knows his s**t, and he put it together. He did [Top Gun: Maverick] just last year, and Bad Boys is Jerry Bruckheimer. So we have that same brain behind Beverly Hills Cop, and he put all the pieces in place that were required for us to make a great movie. And I’m excited for people to see it.”

It’s been almost 30 years since a new Beverly Hills Cop film was released, but that streak will soon come to an end with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, which is currently in production for Netflix. Starring Eddie Murphy, the comedian and actor rose to stardom on the back of the 80s franchise, which hasn’t seen a new movie since 1994.

Speaking recently with People, the now 62-year-old star spoke about how filming the fourth film in the beloved buddy cop franchise was much different now than it was 30 years ago.

“It was a hard one. I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore. It was an action movie. So it was a rough one. But we got through it.”

In the original 1984 film, Beverly Hills Cop, Murphy starred as Axel Foley in a fish out of water story about a Detroit detective who finds himself in Beverly Hills, California, investigating the death of his friend. Made on a budget of just $13 million dollars, the film grossed $316 million worldwide, and made Murphy a household name, paving the way for two sequels in 1987 and 1994.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley Will Reunite the Original Cast

Paramount Pictures/Netflix

The first poster for the upcoming fourth movie in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, was released recently alongside the first trailer. The poster centers on Axel Foley’s police badge, with the character set to be played once again by Eddie Murphy, as well as revealing that the long-awaited sequel is now due to land on the streaming platform in summer 2024.

You can’t have a buddy cop movie without some buddies, and Murphy will be joined by some familiar faces in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Original co-stars Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot will all reprise their roles from the original trilogy. The new film will see Murphy’s character of Axel Foley return to Beverly Hills, this time with his daughter and her ex-boyfriend in tow, investigating police corruption.

Continuing his conversation with People, Murphy spoke about the physicality he had to endure while shooting the new film.

“It’s a really physical movie and I had to do some physical stuff….I like to be on the couch, I don’t like to be jumping over and shooting and running…and I had to do some jumping and shooting and running. And as a result…at the end of the movie, I had a knee brace and my back is messed up. But the movie is gonna be special.”

Directed by Mark Molloy and starring Kevin Bacon, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Taylor Paige alongside Eddie Murphy, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley is now due to premiere on Netflix on July 3, 2024.
