Colin Trevorrow Addresses Fan Reactions to His Star Wars IX Script

As the original writer/director of The Rise of Skywalker, Colin Trevorrow was encouraged by fan praise of his unmade movie.

There have been many “could have beens” in the Star Wars Universe, and one of those was Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow’s version of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. As part of the divisive sequel trilogy to the original Star Wars movies, the ninth movie of the franchise ended up being brought to screens by J.J. Abrams, but prior to that Trevorrow worked on the movie for two years between 2015 and 2017. Like many projects that were lost to creative differences, the intended script of Trevorrow’s leaked online a few years later and fans had their say on what they thought of the proposed movie.

In general, the reaction to Trevorrow’s version of the final movie in the Skywalker Saga was positive, and in a recent interview the director was asked if fan reactions to his unmade movie have come as a kind of victory after the way The Rise of Skywalker was panned by many critics and fans. Speaking to THR, Trevorrow said:

“Honestly, if any director tells you that they don’t care what the audience thinks, or even people who watch movies and write about them for a living, then I’m not sure if they’re being fully honest with themselves. I do make these movies for audiences, but I also make them for people who think about film all the time and watch movies the way that I do. Any time you do something that’s received well, it’s going to encourage you and hopefully assure you that not only was there a reason why you started doing this in the first place, but your imposter syndrome is only partially real and you’re not a complete fraud. And I think we all have those moments.”

Colin Trevorrow’s Star Wars IX Will Remain A “What If” Movie

While the released version of The Rise of Skywalker didn’t come anywhere close to ending the saga on the kind of unanimous high everyone hoped for, Colin Trevorrow’s outline of his movie could well have ended up changing quite a bit if it had gone into production. Duel of Fates, as it was called, included a lot of Princess Leia in the story, and of course, the passing of Carrie Fisher meant that her appearances in the film would have been massively reduced, and the story could have ended up changing entirely.

Despite that though, there are a lot of fans who would have liked to see Trevorrow have the chance to continue with his version of Star Wars IX, and, who knows, it could have ended up being a much better, or much worse, movie than the one that was released in 2019. In the end though, Trevorrow departing the Star Wars project allowed him to return to the Jurassic World franchise and being the story he started in 2015 to a close how he wanted. Just like The Rise of Skywalker, the finale of the Jurassic World trilogy hasn’t exactly hit the mark with critics, but its box office numbers have once again suggested that there are certain movies where critic reviews really don’t make a difference to at all.
