Every Movie Coming to HBO Max in July 2025

July is here, and the temperatures just keep rising. If you live in the right place, it’s the perfect time to hit the beach or have a BBQ, but if it’s simply too hot out, there’s nothing better to do indoors than watch movies. Thanks to the numerous streaming services, there are seemingly endless options to choose from, and that’s especially true of Max (hilariously rebranding back to HBO Max). Whether you’re a horror lover, a Coen brothers fanboy, or a champion of indie cinema, here are the best films coming to Max in July 2025.

‘Get Out’

Streaming July 1

It’s crazy to think that a decade ago, Jordan Peele was best known as one half of one of the best comedy sketch duos of this millennium. Suffice it to say, virtually nobody was prepared for the powder keg that was Get Out, his directorial debut that immediately announced him as a major horror auteur and won him a well-deserved Oscar for Original Screenplay. Centered around a young Black man (Daniel Kaluuya, his breakout performance), what starts as a simple visit to the parents of his white girlfriend (Allison Williams) quickly unearths dark secrets, and it becomes clear that they have more nefarious purposes for him.

To put it simply, Get Out is the kind of high-concept genre film that gets everything right, from the top-caliber acting performances to the technical craft, and yet it’s the high-wire tonal balancing act that Peele so completely nails. At one moment, it’s a laugh-out-loud funny social satire, and at another, it’s genuinely chilling and frightening, and Peele expertly builds up the tension every second. It’s almost unheard of for a big-name director to capture lightning in a bottle with their debut feature, but Peele did exactly that, and it’ll be available to watch on Max on July 1.

‘The Big Lebowski’

Streaming July 1

It’s not often that a cult classic eventually becomes an outright classic, and yet we can’t think of many more obvious or deserving examples of that than The Big Lebowski. Hot off the heels of their phenomenal success with Fargo, Joel and Ethan Coen promptly used their blank check to make something completely different: an offbeat stoner noir that couldn’t be easily pinned to a single genre. Following the life of Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski (Jeff Bridges), a bowler and former hippie, the story kicks off when he gets mistaken for a millionaire with the same name, who’s trying to rescue his wife from a ransom kidnapping.

Jason Momoa & Jack Black’s $954M Box Office Goldmine Builds on Its Success With Massive HBO Max Streaming Debut

The most unlikely box office winner has continued to dig in with a chart-topping streaming debut on Max.

The Coens openly took inspiration from the detective novels of Raymond Chandler, whose mystery novels were notoriously convoluted and labyrinthine in their plotting, but they have an explicitly comedic bent with their setup. If anything, the mystery is secondary, and the Coens are much more interested in the characters, specifically the Dude and his best friend and Vietnam veteran Walter Sobchak (a never-funnier John Goodman). It’s a film that includes several bizarre interludes and encounters with quirky side characters, but that appropriately reflects the Dude’s Kafkaesque life. The Dude abides, and he hits Max on July 1.

‘On Becoming a Guinea Fowl’

Streaming July 4

While Rungano Nyoni’s debut feature, I Am Not A Witch, was undeniably powerful, her follow-up, On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, is somehow an even bigger leap forward. Maybe the most unsung gem released so far this year, the film centers around a young Zambian woman, Shula, whose uncle has recently passed away. Her mother’s house hosts a funeral in his memory, where seemingly everyone in her extended family stays for the week, during which her modern existence clashes with her familial traditions.

She and her cousins are expected to be subservient to the men in their lives, and it’s only behind closed doors that they can commiserate about how the deceased was almost certainly abusive to some or most of them. Nyoni never spells things out explicitly, instead unflinchingly exploring family dynamics wrought with tensions, brought about by a generational divide and maintained by individuals who’d rather maintain the status quo than confront old wounds. It’s easily one of 2025’s best so far, and Max viewers will finally have the chance to watch it on July 4.

‘Sinners’

Streaming July 4

At long last, the breakout hit of 2025 (and arguably the year’s best film to date) is finally coming to streaming. In a blockbuster landscape seemingly overwhelmed by sequels, reboots, and pre-existing IP, Sinners is a shot of adrenaline and a giant creative leap forward for director Ryan Coogler (it’s also his first completely original story). Set in the Jim Crow South, the film centers around twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan in a jaw-dropping dual performance), who work to open a juke joint for the local community, but the grand opening forces them to fight a horde of vampires.

Michael B. Jordan fans know this has been a long time coming.

The result is a film that hits an effortless balance of thematic complexity and crowd-pleasing entertainment. On the one hand, Sinners is positively bursting with ambition, tackling assimilation, artistic creation, religious guilt, and cultural celebration to a degree that feels clearly personal to Coogler. But most of all, Sinners is flat-out fun, proudly wearing its genre influences on its sleeve and delivering on all the thrills and scares that we expect. It’s nothing less than the complete blockbuster package, fully deserving of its status as the highest-grossing original film of the last 15 years, and it finally hits Max on July 4.
