Fantastic Four Still Expected to Be Jon Watts Next Movie, Filming This Year

If anything is guaranteed to have offers of work flooding through your door, then directing a monster blockbuster like Spider-Man: No Way Home might do it, as Jon Watts is currently finding out. According to several reports, Watts will be producing a new Final Destination reboot for New Line Cinema and working on a George Clooney and Brad Pitt-starring project for Apple. However, despite his growing list of upcoming movies, it seems that his next film will still be Marvel’s Fantastic Four.

A report by Variety revealed that Watts is now joining the team behind the latest Final Destination movie but also mentioned that there is nothing to suggest that The Fantastic Four will not be his next movie. Marvel has yet to officially announce a release date, casting, or in fact, anything at all about the upcoming introduction of the superhero team into the MCU, but their arrival cannot be anything other than imminent.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Speaking to ComicBook.com last year, Kevin Feige gave a big hint that casting was probably being carried out in secret on the newly re-acquired Marvel family members, as he suggested that the new group will be made up of some well known and less well-known stars. Feige explained:

“I think the MCU is a beautiful combination of both (established actors and new faces). I think you look no further than Simu in Shang-Chi, like Chris Hemsworth, like Tom Hiddleston, like Tom Holland, an actor that hadn’t been seen by a tremendous amount of people before, or you have a Benedict stepping into Doctor Strange or Christian Bale stepping into Gor in our Thor film. It is always a beautiful combination of both, and it really is about the search for the best actor for the job whether that actor is known to the world yet or not.”

The Fantastic Four Is Set to Film Later This Year for a 2023 Release

There is a lot of circumstantial evidence to suggest that Jon Watts will begin filming the MCU debut of The Fantastic Four sometime this year, with an eye on a release date of later in 2023 or early 2024. Currently, the last MCU movie with a release date is Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which arrives in cinemas on July 28th, 2023, and was originally the final Phase 4 movie. However, an updated Marvel showreel released before the arrival of Black Widow extended the list to include the title plate of The Fantastic Four, leading many to believe the film would be coming as a new end to the Phase 4 line-up.

Since then, nothing more has been revealed about the movie, but following the recent reshuffle of Disney’s release slate, this is one more Marvel movie coming in November 2023 and one in February 2024. The two most talked about and likely contenders to take these slots are The Fantastic Four and Blade, and considering filming on the third Ant-Man movie has been completed, and both The Marvels and Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.3 are set to wrap within the next month or so, it would be expected that a new Marvel movie would be heading into production as soon as they are done.

With many rumors also circulating around which characters will make their first appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the arrival of at least one member of the Fantastic Four is a strong possibility. With Kevin Feige recently teasing that Doctor Strange reshoots were carried out to include several new introductions, if casting has already happened for the likes of Mr. Fantastic and his team, then it would make sense for their first appearance to come in such an all-encompassing story. If not, then surely by the time Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness drops in May, we will have found out something more about the impending arrival.
